Cold Weather Problem ??

I have recently completed my move from Hawaii to Denver and have noticed a problems when my M5 is cold. If I just start it up and go on a cold morning there is a very noticeable whine/grinding sound coming from the steering system. The harder/farther I crank the steering wheel the louder the sound. After the car is warmed up, no problems.

I also have a surging sound out idle. It revs and drops then revs and drops. Until warm.

Any ideas??

It goes to the dealer on Monday but sometimes you guys know more than them ;)

Well, the flucuation in revs in normal for the M5 is cold weather. It is a quick way to get them up to tempature to help emissions I beleive. In fact, there was a thread discussing this earlier this week, and the conclusion was all M5s do it. As far as the steering whine, I am not sure what could be causing that. Maybe you are a bit low on steering fluid? Please let us know what the dealer finds with the car.

Well if you were to move me from Hawaii to Colorado this time of year
I would be cranky too...

Hope it works out!

hiha hiha hiha

We got hit with a cold snap that has kept us in the 30's and 40's for the past few days, with freezing rain/drizzle and fog ... Hawaii is looking pretty good right now. :haha: :haha:

But I have a good nights sleep every night and there is plenty of room to let my cars run so ... it was worth it.

I have exactly the same steering wheel problem

There is a whine and the wheel is hard to turn. I just took the car into the shop today for that and other things. I'll let you know. My suspicion, though, is that some belt is wearing and gets brittle when it's cold.
