side airbags for rear passengers?

Page 54 in the 2001 owners manual U.S. version, states that "The side airbags in the rear passenger area of your vehicle may already have been deactivated, at the time of manufacture or by a BMW center. You may have them activated if you so desire. Please contact your BMW centerfor info." Upon inspection of my rear door jam there is a sticker that states the bags are infact deactivated!!!! Anybody care to explain why this is????? All that design work to incorporate them and then they turn them off?? Is it due to children?? Please enlighten me!

Yes, this has been discussed before. But I believe it is an option that the owner has to decide because they dont know who the passengers would be and like you said if the passengers are children it would even be more dangerous for them if they were sleeping on the side of the door and having the airbag inflate. It is free of charge the first time and if you decide to deactivate it or reactivate it late I think theres a cost.

I just had them activated and the process is not so easy. The panels, side window shades, etc. have to be removed in order to connect some components within the door. No charge.
