Re: Just had my DSP stereo upgraded! One word.... NICE!

Congrats.

I've heard before on a much earlier stereo upgrade thread that the MB Quartz are a perfect match for the car.

Sounds like you've got another winner there.

KBK;
I WOULD BE VERY INTERESTED IN ONE OF THE SYSTEMS YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT PUTTING TOGETHER. i AM DISSATISFIED WITH THE EXISTING SYSTEM AND WOULD LIKE AN INTEGRATED WELL DESIGNED SYSTEM. pLEASE LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU MIGHT BE PUTTING THESE TOGETHER.

I'll post some alternatives soon, as I'm doing this upgrade myself. I'd like to keep the DSP crossover working..so..all i need is a set of wide dispersion, long excursion, wide bandwidth 5.5 inch drivers, designed for high output in small sealed enclosures. I've likely got information on about 200 or so drivers to choose from.. ug. too much like work.

I might put a kit together, one I can supply..'on demand', for the E-39 chassis. Easy enough.

This would include the 'acosutical grade' foam I speak of, which is not available anywhere..at any price. There is plenty of stuff on the market, but not like this. Not of this type and quality.

This is important, vital in fact.

The backwave of the drivers must be absorbed, as much as is possible, to cut interference from the re-radiated noise in the enclosure from contaminating the driver's cone..again..as it bounces around in the plastic enclosures.

PS, I can easily design a woofer for these cars...but I'd need guarantees for about 25 sets. They'd be pretty cheap, actually, about well..can't release costing information so casually, can I?

Oh yes. some preliminary specs. 90 db efficency. 1 full inch of throw, or woofer travel. A VERY serious mid-woofer. Should be doable, but I have to get the door panels off and take a look. See what spaces are in there.

maybe take apart an E60 too.....

Re: Just had my DSP stereo upgraded! One word.... NICE!

I have to clean out the garage, heat it up, and put the 5 in there, haul all my computerised test gear in there..ug.... but it is doable. Winter in Canada. Thank the gods for garages.

OK. Getting somewhere.

Did a bit of searching on the net. Came up with the kind of statement that I was hoping to see and suspected i would see.

This:

" A Motorola 56004 is used, which is a 24 bit device. The DSP is capable to independently control the magnitude, phase angle and frequency of six output channels ... "

"AH-HA!" I exclaimed loudly, pointing my finger with much impetus at the Computer monitor, and then thumping the chair's armrest, "Dammit!"

A simple re-flash of the stock software (maybe not so simple but MUCH MUCH MUCH easier to figure out FIRST, before doing anything at all to the car..

First, figure out exactly how the unit is programmed, as it does have a set programming system. It is likely to be in a surface mounted chip. Some sort of 'prom' chip. Read the chip, decode the software setting and custom program another 'prom. Cut old 'prom out, install a new 'prom (solder in place) and.... voila! whatever you desire to come out of those 12 channels, and then, one can install 12 pre-amp out connectors on each of those 6 stereo D/A converters.

And at that point, you've got ANALOG..OR..DIGITAL output of the 12 channels, each with whatever sonic qualites you may want. (what you 'flashed' into the NEW software)

One could still use the DSP amp box, for example, but remove the amplifier parts, and use that for a pre-amp system location...with the DSP board still inside the amp box, connected to the preamp section. hhmm...(you need a preamp section, as the D/A converters are not suitable for driving amps directly). A few line driver boxes could be stripped and added into the box, where the previous amplifier 'section/board' was. One big problem I'm seeing though, is the DSP board gets it's power FROM the amplifier board. This is getting tricky... but the power supply for the DSP section could be stolen from the line driver gutty-wuts, which they can still have THEIR power supplies intact..and plugged into the car's 12 volt system. Same way and place the original amplifier was.

Waht I amtalking about, is the complete scrapping and modification of the DSP amp box. It will still funtion normally, but the output would be totally different, which is what you folks seem to be wanting.

It's doable but hey, someon has to go out there with the desire to do so.

This is a job for the DIYaudio.com crew I'm thinking. tricky but doable.
