Power Differences on M5's?

Hi,

Just read a few of the threads concerning the new supersprint exhaust headers etc..

One thing though, do US M5's not have the normal 400bhp? (or thereabouts)?

apologise in advance if its a dumb question, but I thought all E39 M5's had 400bhp (well technically around 394bhp) etc..

Could it be due to the difference in petrol used?

cheers

Tin

Tin,
My understanding is that BMW claims that there can be as much as a 10% variation in horsepower within the e39 M5 production run.

I am sure that the octane level also affects hp.

Cheers.

No, that has nothing to do with the horsepower variation in terms of hp figures between US and Euro M5's. Although, BeastPower is correct in guessing that there could be as much as 10% variation between the HP figures produced by S62 engines, this isn't the case here.

The reason why it's measured at 400 hp in Europe is because they use the DIN method of measuring horsepower whereas in the US they use the SAE method. The slight difference between those two methods accounts for why the horsepower figures are different.

This also affects the E46 M3 too. In Europe, they're rated at 343 hp DIN, and with the slight emissions change plus the difference in measuring horsepower, the US model puts out 333 hp SAE.

Hope this clears things up for you.

Jason,
You are right about DIN vs. SAE, but this is not what I thought was being asked. Based on Tin's statement:

"but I thought all E39 M5's had 400bhp (well technically around 394bhp) etc.".

It did not seem as though he was asking about the crank HP variation.

Cheers.

ah... acutally your both right!

I didn't realise about the SAE v DIN measurement and the 10% leaway in power figures.. (seems alittle excessive though!)..

Thanks

I just got word today that my car dyno'd at EvoSport at 330RWHP.

This is with PowerChip, X-Pipe, and Exhaust.

I am so mad you can't even believe. The chip makes a huge difference of about 10-15hp at the wheels, so this means my baseline would be about 315-320RWHP.

Now I am thinking about selling my car.... I am FURIOUS.

That means I get about 388hp with the mods, which is very disturbing to me.

Do you think my 19" wheels have anything to do with it?

Hey Hamann7,

Don't stress. There are so many variables with the dyno that it is reasonable to believe that their could be as much as a 15% variance on one to another, or from one day to another.

Maybe the vehicle wasn't secured down tight enough. I picked up 20HP just by sitting in the boot one one dyno.

One dyno guy tried to tell me I had 240Hp. I asked him, In Which particular wheel he felt that 240HP was in.

I still to date haven't got a reading above the DSC Cutoff.

I think DiscoFish summoned it up best the other day. "The fastest way to make someones car slower is take it too the Track."

Trap speed doesn't lie. Do a Quater mile run, don't be too concerned with your E.T's just see what Terminal speed you get.

That is a very accurate way of knowing if the Ponies are there or not.

I can't wait to get back out with the new clutch setup.

I know that you are disappointed. I was too a while back when I dynoed my beast and didn't get even close to what I had expected. From what I have been seeing on this message board, 330 RWHP is about average for the e39 M5. The X-pipe and exhaust could be a negative factor, like I just found with my ex-X-pipe and Eisenmann setup. I believe that the X-pipe and Kelleners/Eisenmann are too free flowing. I felt a major improvement with the Tubi.

Outside temperature and heat soak can also make a big difference, as can selecting the appropriate gear when testing (I found the best results to be in 4th).

Cheers.

When we dyno'ed a few M5 together a few years ago the average RWHP was in the range of 310-320 on the Dynojet. I have long believed there was more variation in M5 power than should be allowed. 10% is ridiculous and Ford/Mazda got in some hot water for over-estimating HP claims. There should be some mandated non-partial testing that goes on or the figures should become wheel HP and not crank b/c who has the ability to check crank? Just like in the muscle-car era when they were optomistic with numbers (gross vs. net) I think someday the numbers that are being thrown around now will also be proven somewhat bogus. JMO
