OT: Fastest way to drive an auto

First of all I would like to apologize for posting this here. But really I don?t know where it would fit on this forum. Maybe an OT section would be a good idea.

But anyways in class today I was arguing with some people about how professionals test the 0-60 speeds on automatics. I argued that they simply floor it from the start to finish.
Others argued that they use special techniques to keep it in gear longer, etc. to achive faster acceleration.
I know my car (Volvo) has a little 'sport' button that will take it close to the redline when you floor it, and generally make the care more fun to drive. But aside from that, I cant see how you could make a automatic perform any better.
So what is the fastest way to drive an automatic? Thanks!

If your Volvo is a turbo push both brakes and gas at the same time as hard as you cas so you can get the turbo spooling and let it stay for a sec or 2 and just let it go that's the way I get my Tiptonic S4 going from a dead stop.

M5Laser, I would suggest that you talk to your parents and tell them to get a standard next time they buy a car...

From my experience, the car is smarter than the driver and will shift at the last possible moment. But ofcourse a mild powerbrake is necessary for a proper launch.

Won't work on the 2.3 Turbo engines as Volvo's computers put a halt to any fun while in 1st gear. You can brake/gas all day but it will just keep ******ing the timing to keep torque at their specifed levels. Thats eliminated when 2nd comes up, and hang on for the torque steer - it's gonna be a fun ride.

I believe you are looking for the term Power braking. The benefits you recieve from this are negligble on a Stock torque converter automatic transmission. To power brake an auto you generally bring the engine rpms up to where it isright below the stall speed of the converter. Usually it is a couple hundred rpms below the stall speed of the TC (Different for every application). Then simultaneously let the brake off and floor the accelerator the rest of the way . This technique will cause the TC to flash (Stall at a higher rpm mometarily)and away you go. Now when you install a performance(Loose) torque converter that pretty much stalls right around your max torque output of the engine. Gains of up to a second or better can be cut off quarter mile times. Bottom line practice makes perfect.

Laser ,

My Volvo is an auto & it rolls out of first great. Turbo Lag is a ***** though. What volvo do you have ? If you swap out a turbo-deisel tranny into your brick it can take much more abuse.

I would also suggest ordering a boost conntroller & crank it up a few psi, you will notice a difference .

Thanks
josh

One of the beauty of a force induction engine car is it can be easily modified. My '95 Volvo 850 turbo has a Group 6 ECU which raises the boost to about 1.1 bar and eliminates the "limited" first gear boost. I ran consistent 14.2 ~ 14.3 in the quarter with this setup. Oh, that's with a little power braking, of course.

BTW, I'm tempted to put a few other mods into the Volvo to get it into the 300hp range. It has 270hp right now with the modified ECU.

Later,
Kenneth

I hate to disappoint you guys but I don’t have a turbo. Its a 1995 850. I’m not sure exactly what hp it has although it feels fast. I’m sure you guys are all gonna laugh at me, but I have never lost a street race yet.
Anyways...so no boost pressure changing or brake launches for me
Thanks
