Just read that the E39 M5 was just about to reach 12,000 produced since October 1998. Apparently that is more than all the E34 M5s produced over a period 3 times longer. Would be interesting to know how that breaks down by country

I have to question those numbers. The US is the single largest market, and has consumed only 1,500/year. This means the rest of the world had to consume 4 times as much - is that possible? Just wondering.

Not sure US is the biggest market for M cars but it may be for BMWs as a whole. Also remember they have been selling E39 M5s in Europe since Oct 1998 whereas in US it has only been available since end 1999.

No doubt about that. BMW is really cranking out the E39's. I only have the US numbers. Since we're the largest market for M cars, you can extrapolate that to the rest of the world.

You've been at the BMW Car mag again! I don't know for sure but would guess USA is the no. 1 market in terms of sheer numbers. Switzerland has the highest density of E39 M5's.

Well, Part of the reason why the E39 M5s are built in larger numbers is that it's more user friendly than the E34. The E34 was more of a sports car. It was agressive, it had a very hard sports suspension system, etc. Another reason is that the E39 is built alongside the 'normal' fives on the 5 series prodcution line. The E34s were handbuilt at BMW's M factory. The fact that the the E34s were not sold after a while in the US is another reason, I guess.
