Break In period

I have 350 miles after the first week and do not have definitive information on the 4500 RPM issue. What is the scoop? What service issues have been dealt with at the 1200 mile inspection?

Not sure what your question is - there is a sticker on the window with the break-in instructions, though. The 1200 mile service changes transmission and differential oil only. (Many of us have requested and paid for an engine oil change at the same time. Apparently in Europe the engine oil is also changed at this point.)

Observe a 4,500 rpm redline until after your 1,200 mile service. At that service, they change your trans gear oil, nothing else, though I think some have had the diff. oil changed, too as part of the service. They don't change engine oil at this interval. After that service, drive it moderately, with occasional runs to redline until you get past 3,500 mi., then your conscience is the limit. No other service issues for such a new car, though you might be subject to the tire inspection recall. A defective tire machine at the factory cut up the inside sidewall on some tires, and the recall is to inspect and see if you have cuts. If not, nothing else is done. The recall notices came out a few weeks back, so it's likely they took care of this inspection before they delivered your car. If you don't have the phone option, you might consider swapping out the std. armrest with the phone trough for a solid one with a storage bin underneath. Have fun, but restrain yourself for the first 3,500, and if you can't do that, at least for the first 1,200!

It is my understanding that these engines are run much higher than 4500 rpm when tested, before the car is built. Anybody know?

I thought I had read the max rpm for the first 1200 miles was 5500?? Is it 4500 or 5500?? Thanks

Max = 4500 rpm during run-in. Change the engine oil to be on the safe side and don't worry if the oil consumption is a bit high for the next few thousand miles - should settle by 10k.

My window instructions say 5,500rpm max. for the first 1,200 miles.
But I never passed 5k anyway.

And It was mandatory engine, transmition and rear axle oil change.
I've just used 1 1/2 quarts in all after 4,000 miles. Not much I guess...

I'm learning a lot form you "experts"...but, now I'm scared! Two weeks ago, I traded in my 2000 Mercedes CLK430 for a 2001 M5 at the local Mercedes dealership. (We're expecting our first baby in two weeks, and I had to get a 4-door. That's what I told my wife anyway...wink,wink!) The beast had 500 miles on it and it was originally delivered in North Carolina. I am hoping that the first owner wasn't too abusive. I'm going in next week for the 1200 check-up. My fingers are crossed!!!

I frankly don't understand what's all the hipe about the break in period?
My father is an engine engineer and worked with several car manufactures during engine tests. The engine is broken in on the factory. It runs for several hours at different rpms and different loads (much higher then 5500), they give it full trottle for some period as well. Therefore there is no need to baby your engine even during so called break in period.
Some car manufactures recognize that and tell you to bring the car for service only at 5000-10000 miles to change oils.
BMW (and other German mfcs VW) advise you to take it easy during the first 1000 miles, mostly for the sake of transmission (gear box, differential) and to see if there are any defects in the car that will go...

I understand it's a high performance car, so many things can go wrong with it (as people noted on this board). But you'll notice it much sooner,during the first 100-200 miles..
So no need to worry and be paranoid about it....
