Post How long have people been waiting, that are still waiting, for their car in the U.S.?

I read with interest the thread on how long it took for people to get their new M5.....seems like the average was about 12 months (some were luckier!).

But, for those of us who are still waiting, I wonder how long you have been waiting. I got on the list at a medium size dealer in the Chicago area Nov '98 and my order has yet to be scheduled for build (although, the dealer tells me I'm next). The prioritization and status is mysterious and frustrating.

How long have you been waiting?

Although it took me a year to get my M5, Jan. '99 'til Jan. '00, the car was not even available in the US until Sept. '99. I was initially number 10 at the dealer I bought it from, but 5 people cancelled their order so as not to get the car in the winter. I'm glad I got mine in the winter because it made taking it easy for the break-in a little more tolerable.

I ordered my M5 this past February. The dealer tells me that I will get a August build with a Sept. delivery.

Do you think it's possible to get the car in 6 months, or did the dealer just BS me to get the order? The dealer is Vista in Pompano Beach, FL.

I put my deposit down and got on the list in January. My dealer now tells me that I'm #3 on the list and expects a July build with a September delivery. I'm hoping to have it delivered to Spartenburg. Take the two day class and drive it back!

marlin, yes it is possible to get the car in six months. i only had to wait a few months. the only thing i would question is the august build. i've heard that bmw shuts down for vacation in august. good luck. you'll love the car when you do get it.

Marlin,

I would say the average wait is about a year but you can get lucky. I put my order in at the end of May 99 and got my car at the begining of April. Several factors go into how quickly you get your car: (i) the size of the delership - will affect the dealership's car allocation, and (ii) the attrition rate of people on the waiting list. I started off as #20 on the reservation list and I think i got the 10th or 12th car delivered at my dealership - Difeo.

I put my M5 deposit down in late February and was told I could expect to see it in November or December. Now, I'm told that I should have it in late July or early August! Of course, I'll believe it when the actual order is confirmed with BMW.

I got on the list in December 1998. The dealer contacted me in December of 1999 for the actual color and interior choices. The car was built in January and delivered March 1. One year. Some are available aftermarket if the $$$ doesn't matter, about $15,000 over.
