Never was on a list. Just happened to be in the right place at the right time last Fall. The dealer ( a large one) received an M5 which was not meant for anyone in particular. I found out about it and bought it the next day. Just lucky.
Mine was ordered through Ganley in Middleburg Hts as well. They are, shall we say, not local to me...
As mentioned, we're doing Euro Delivery and I've been reluctant to pat anyone on the back until the car is here, intact, but so far the process has been painless.
Jem, I ordered in Ft Lauderdale in February and the dealer said on Friday I can expect to order my Color etc in June. I noticed Euro delivery on your post and would like the same thing. Tell my how you worked that out, my guy was not knowledgeable about that.

I just learned that the factory system just accepted the 5th order from the Chicago area dealer that I was listed at since Nov '98. Happily that was my order, so I waited about 17 months to get an accepted order. I have a production number and so we start at status 111. The dealer tells me the car should be built early June with delivery mid-July.
Thanks to the board participants for offering so much input. It is informative to see what issues people are experiencing...as well as to read how much people enjoy this fine car!
"Allocation" is helping a lot of us get our cars a lot faster. These are obviously the M5s the factory has surprised dealers with. Although they are several months away, usually about three or four, they can shorten a long waiting list. New York and Miami are the two biggest markets for BMW on the east coast. Many of these higher volume dealers will get cars allocated mid-year. As one post below wrote, you can be in the right place at the right time and get the car very quickly. Of course, the dealer will be very quiet about this so as not to upset those on the list. These cars are known about way in advance because every dealer must choose what options they want on the car. I would suggest those on the one year plus wait list look around outside of their present market to find a dealer who may have been allocated a car or that has a six to eight month list. Especially if you're not currently driving a BMW. They want a new customer and usually don't care where you live... And I wouldn't pay more than retail for either.
Ordered mine in February. Got a call from my dealer today. Production date is 5/31, delivery in late June. I was #4 on the list at this dealership when I ordered it. Royal Red.
I had waited my way down to #1 on my dealer's list and was hoping to get a car allocated in July. My dealer just informed me that they didn't get any M5's for July and that will be it for the 2000 model year. Argh!! More waiting :-(
I am wondering if BMW has hit its limit of 2000 cars allocated to the US. Has anyone else gotten a car that was allocated for July?
The only upside I can see is that there might be a few (good) changes for the 2001 model year.
John, I have another M5 on order to be built the third week of June. Car is due in early/mid-July. I think they will build cars through early July, but no definite on that.
