Post Noise from the back of the car

Recently, I have noticed a noise from the rear of the car - more like a clonking than a rattle. Checked previous threads with no luck.

The noise is most noticeable at low speed on rough surfaces.

I've removed everything from the boot (trunk), and still get the noise.

Anyone else suffered / have suggestions.

Thanks

Michael

michael,

i have what sounds like a padded, banging noise from the right rear quarter. so far, i have not been able to locate the problem. neither has the dealer. sometimes the sound is loud and sometimes you have to listen for it. had a similar experience with my '98 540 six speed. the dealer checked the straps holding the gas tank but that was not it. after a couple of months though, the noise stopped.
i am hopping for the same with the beast.if you discover the noise is coming from in your car i'd like to hear about it.

thanks,
david e.

Michael,
I noticed a noise coming from the passengers side of my car the other day, too. A kind of "wahwah--wah-wahwahwah--wahwah--wah!" It seems it only happens under hard cornering, rapid accelleration, or high speed lane changes. At first I was like, "what the..." and then I realized what it was. Now, I mainly drive the car without my wife...whooo if she were to read this would I be in the doghouse...LOL. Actually, I have been IN for so long, I forgot what our HOUSE looks like...not making light of your problem, just hoping to give you a laugh!

if you have fold down seats that might be the problem.

I just took mine in for the same problem, so far it seems repaired, but that's after only one drive. I have folding rear seats, I think that was the problem, but it is fixable.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Yep - I do have fold down seats, but I tried pulling / pushing them manually, but couldn't recreate the noise.

The noise seems to come from both sides of the car - I believe the car has two fuel tanks - so certainly the straps could be the problem.

M5Kid - do you know what they did to fix your problem?

Thanks for your ideas.

Michael- I experienced similar noises with my 2000 M5. I had the gas tank straps insulated, and I had foam packed in under the rear deck (accessed from the trunk). Neither helped; the noise, which was a little like a light briefcase bouncing on the trunk floor, most noticeable when going over rough spots, continued. Next I tried insulating all the compartments and "flaps" in the trunk. That seemed to help somewhat. I also saw a post here suggesting buying foam strips with adhesive (weather strips) to use in the trunk and for the split seats. Now, with 9k miles, it seems like the noises have worked themselves out. Or maybe it is the throaty Dinan exhaust supplanting them! Good luck with your car.

I had a rattling from the rear deck as well. When my mechanic re-installed the deck after the Nav tv install, the rattling disappeared. My car is not rattle free.
