Miles Before Clutch Replacement

My clutch started to slip on Friday. I had 33,500 miles on the original clutch, so I figured a clutch replacement would be available under the full maintenance coverage. I asked my SA if there'd be any problem replacing the clutch under covered maintenance. "Not a problem," he said. "Last week I replaced an M5 clutch that only had 6,000 miles on it. Obviously, that was a case of bad driving."

Anyway, I'm getting a "free" BMW replacement clutch. Maybe I'll consider an upgrade when this one wears out -- MIB's carbotic clutch sounds intriguing. In the meantime, I'm wondering if I got worse than average mileage on the OEM clutch. So, I want to to know:

How many miles did you drive your M5 before replacing the original BMW clutch due to excessive wear?

This poll considers only the miles on the original BMW clutch at the time of replacement due to excessive wear. If you're still driving on the original clutch, there's a choice for that -- please indicate your mileage and click the last choice too. Don't simply indicate your current mileage. Thanks for your input.

My clutch was replaced because the pressure plate had bent fingers. The tech told me the clutch lining looked like new. 22,000
miles.I was shocked when he told me!

Wow Robert, that is a surprise. Now how could those fingers get bent?

Bill, The tech showed me the pressure plate and the finger was bent about one inch down. looking from the throw out bearing, I know what you mean about the clutch

The tech had mention about something came from bmw, that if the customer said they hear clicking noise's from the clutch when depressed while the motor is off, that is a sure sign that some thing is wrong with your pressure plate.

I also felt a click from the clutch pedal at certain times. But never could duplicate when trying to show someone.

My clutch squeaks when I depress (or release) the pedal.

My service tech said I need a new clutch. It still holds fine (unless I try to do a high rev shift without matching engine speed)

I'm at 62,000 miles. No warranty for me. So I can live with the sqeaking for now.

I did almost 40k on the 2001 M5 without a hint of clutch slip. I was not easy on the car at all. In fact, I overheated the clutch once doing something very idiotic. Once it cooled down though, it held again.

I do get that slight squeak from my 2003 when I depress the clutch though. Makes me want to go and get it checked out.

Hey JFB,

First signs were at 7,000 Km's. Now at 9,500 Km's Yoda has no clutch at all. He is in the dealer right now, gearbox out, No P/Plate no clutch and no flywheel.

I'm using the stock Ring gear, that has to be machined of the stock flywheel.

All systems are GO. Finalised and ready is the BMW 850 Sprung centre with 5 buttons, (Carbotic compound). Looks sweet, I may get a chance tommorrow to snap some pics.

The Custom flywheel just needs the Stock ring gear to be fitted, and then its already to be put into Yoda.

72 Hours and I shpiould be Burning serious Rubber, Not clutch compound.

P.S. The Dealer is doing ALL LABOUR under full warrenty. They game me a new clutch and flywheel, but I'm setting them aside to collect dust. They agreed to fit all of the new components.

I told them the alternative was to keep replacing the clutch every three months. They had no problems and were very accomodating.

I wonder what the record is for the longest continuous burnout from a standstill is. J/K.

Re: Miles Before Clutch Replacement

I was going to post a poll on clutch replacement and found this post. Not too many responses to the original thread. It would be great if more members voted and posted some feedback.

Re: Miles Before Clutch Replacement

My '01 Beast with 31K is at the dealer now getting the clutch looked over to see what is causing the slippage/over rev I get when changing gears. Their initial response to me is on this thread:

Clutch Replacement

Re: Miles Before Clutch Replacement

50K miles on the original and still going... however shifting from 4th to 5th at redline will slip a little if the shift is sloppy I guess the clock is ticking
