Ck Engine Light on

The Service Engine Soon Light came on in my '01 Beast tonight on the way home. Car seemed to lose some power and bucked at one stop-light rtake off. After about 14 minutes it went off again and car seemed to perform normally. Called dealer. He said probably emissions problem and to bring it in tomorrow.
Anybody else experience this? Car's about a 9/00 build, 12/00 delivery.
Appreciate any input.

I just had a problem like that yesterday. I was at lunch and when I came out I noticed a stupid nail in the corner of my left rear sidewall. Got on the freeway, and no tire defect messages or anything, but I noticed that the "service engine soon" light was on and that the car was muffled and literally limped along, as if it had 1/8th of the power. Foot to the floor in 3rd gear, i could COUNT the time it took to get from 70 -> 75. Pulled off, turned car off then on, and it's been fine since.

Let me know what your dealer says.

You guys are not alone. This same phenomenon has been discussed elsewhere on the board, but I can't find it.

Must be all the computers in the car. You know, system crashes or freezes; to fix, reboot!

Thanks guys. Dropped my baby off at Prestige Motors in Santa Rosa this morning. Service mgr said they would try and see what's in the computer memory later today. Also have a front end vibration right at 70mph on a regular basis, so they will research that too!
I'll let you know what they find re the engine light.

Funny, I had the same thing happen to me last week. Driving along, Service Engine light came on, lost power, after about 10 minutes, power came back and light went off. I immediately dropped it off at the dealer. They read the diagnostic log and found a misfire on cylinder 1 and 8 (fault codes 212, 205, 196). According to my tech, this is a known software bug. BMW is working on a solution, but none is currently available.

Same thing happened to me two weeks ago. I was in 6th doing around 85-90 and the light came on, the engine went a little slow, and I could hear the engine sounded a little different. I took an exit and when I slowed down to around 40 mph, the light went off. I took it to the dealer and they said that one of the catalytic converters had failed, and this was a common occurence on the V8 cars. It appears to be true because my 97 740iL had to have both of its original cats replaced as well. Anyways, after they changed it, it has been running fine since. I'll wait and see how it goes.

Guys, Got my beast back last night. Re Service Engine Light- the dealer found a fault code- #2 cylinder misfired, one time event". They cound not repeat it and the car ran fine for them. Said it might have been a slug of water in fuel and/or piece of sediment stuck in the injector. Problem is the event and poor power/bucking on take off lasted about 15 minutes.
They said just drive it and see what happens! Guess it's another one of life's mysteries. Time will tell.
Still have front end vibration at h'way speeds, even after dealer re-balanced front tires. Another mystery.

vibration at highway speeds can also be caused by warped/worn brake discs (rotors) - probably other things too

I had the same problem on an old car of mine (shudder at about 60-65mph) and wheel balancing didn't help. I got them to first skim the brake discs (better but not cured) and then replace them.

ciao
