now u may be saying, what about the driveline and suspension. For 75k, i would much rather have a clutch that grabs hard, and continues to do so for atleast 70k, sway bar attachments that don't break, and trannys that hold up, then leather on the dash. To me the engine, driveline, and suspension are much more important then trivial creature comforts. Hell, thats why i own a mustang.
400 hp is not impressive any more then for 75k there better be some reliability.
every time i get into my newly aquired m5, im worried something is gonna break.
hamaan im glad that u smoked a rousch mustang however, just about every single mustang owner knows that roush's aren't sh*t.
and since u bring into play straightline speed, i don't think my 546rwhp cobra will have problems with either your m5 or your porsche, but im just guessing, i don't know what u have done.
im not trying to brag, im just saying that just because u raced a mildly modded gt, doesn't mean all mustangs are garbage.
bottom line, for 75 thousand dollars, i expect better, much better. I assure you that honda or toyota could build a 75k sports car that handles as well, is as quick and is way more reliable then the m5. It may not sell worth a **** due to styling and marketing(not to mention branding) but i assure you it could be done.
Oh NO! Showdown! Looks like a very very nice 996 btw. Yes quadcammer, you can mod anything to compete with anything (I have seen P.O.S. Jettas that can and have embarrassed many cars at the drag strip), but those arent a very fair comparison. You can say "well for less money in mods the xyz car would be faster," but then again, if someone can afford a highly modded 996TT, I dont think more money for parts is that big of a deal. I have spent much time around modded fox body 'stangs, and heard the comments from those who have loved them, but to be fair to everyone, the cars mentioned in this post are total apples to oranges, so running them against eachother would only throw egg on one persons face...
Is my Porsche that much nicer than your Stang? For me it is. Is it worth the price difference? Ditto.
The only way to answer that question for yourself is to go drive a 911 Turbo. You will discover that there really is no substitute. A lot of rice rocket and domestic guys ask this same question until they actually drive a Porsche. There really is no comparison.
Should you ever test drive a 996GT2, you would be saving up every penny and using your M5 as the down payment on one. It is that good and that fun.
And in regards to your Blown Cobra comment... put it this way, if my car is putting out over 600whp (with SAE correction, this figure wouldn't chage much), why wouldn't I mess with a Cobra with 600rwhp when I have AWD and can put power to the ground better? On top of that, from a roll on the freeway, my car would demolish it all the way to 200+mph. A Mustang would shake and fall apart at those speeds.
And the best part of all is that the Porsche is not even designed for drag racing, it is a road racing car.
With my suspension setup, lightened weight, and R compound tires, even a highly modded Mustang would get destroyed on the track assuming equal drivers. Ford is behind in chassis engineering, or they simply don't care about overall performance.

well i can't afford a turbo porsche unless it was a beat up 944 but that doesn't mean i haven't driven one. My buddy has a 97 993 TT and it is a great car. is it 50k better then my car, i don't believe so.
you say you think your car will last more then 20 high rpm launches at the strip with that kinda power? My built 8.8 with 4.30 gears and slicks can launch as well as about a 1.55 60 ft time(comparable car, not mine personnally).
You may think my stang will fall apart but that just isn't so. You may pull harder on the top end, but 1/4 mile I think will come out with the cobra ahead.
you say ford can't spend time on chassis engineering?
well when the car is based on a 16 thousand dollar model and only tops out at around 35k, they can't afford to use anything special. the 2005 mustang will have a much better designed suspension on a new platform.
however, in terms of 100 thousand dollar plus cars, i think ford is doing ok with the FORD GT.
my only point is that my cobra has been quite reliable, makes great power for the mods and cost, and basically satisfies my handling needs.
while it may be a huge pos compared to your porsche, not everyone can afford a 100k+ automobile. I think in terms of bang for the buck, my cobra is pretty amazing.
