clutch problems on early cars?

Hi there,

I tried searching, but to no avail..

Has anyone got any info, on whether there was a known problem with the clutch on early 99 model cars?

My clutch squeaks/clicks when I depress the pedal, but it isn't the pedal itself, as the noise is coming from the engine bay area..

My dealer said it could be the "clutch cylinder", but was reluctant to investigate as it wasn't covered under the warranty...

Also on a side note, anyone got any links of companies who produce any performance coil packs for the M5?

Any info, much appreciated.

Cheers

Tin

the M5 has two clutch part numbers with later 21 21 2 282 388 superseding the earlier 21 21 2 289 028. i recently replaced the clutch in my early-build 01 and it had the old part number clutch

hard to say if the new one is better as the old one was not in great shape

anybody else have any info on clutch dates?

what kind of squeak is it? does it sound a little like a creaking of a door that needs its hinges oiled? If yes, and if you cant feel anything in the clutch pedal then I can tell you that my 00 Z8 makes the same noise and we compared it to a brand new 03 Z8 (4 miles) and it too makes this noise so we determined this to be "normal". But I told them I am now "on record" in case something happens.

It's tough to say, as the M5 has always had a weak clutch. Whether or not they have updated the materials is unknown to me....

yes Jerry that is the sound..

The gears etc are unaffected, even when driving alittle harsher

but it does concern me alittle... might try another dealer and see what they say.

Does anyone know if there was any Recalls related to the clutch/gearbox on M5's? similar to the known VANOS problems..

Thanks

I have a 7/00 production M5 and I have always heard a slight mechanical/engagement click/clack as I engage the clutch. I heard the same sounds on the car that I drove at the "M5 experience," in Spartanburg SC. The car that I drove was a 3/00 production M5 and I recall had only 900 miles on it.

Hope this helps.
