Test of aftermarket brakes for the M5 for track use / high speed driving. Anyone?
Regarding Movit vs. Stoptech vs. orignal M5 brakes.
Wouldn't this be a good idea:
Why not equip one M5 with Movit and one with Stoptech. Take them out on the track, let the drivers switch cars.
Or make the same M5 use both systems on the track.
I'm sure somebody would offer their M5 for a test of these brake systems, maybe keep the winner to his car?
Since I'm in Sweden it's quite hard to organize this thing, but aren't there any interested US owners?
Then we'll see what the differences are.
Steve's offer quoted below with some laps at a track would be really interesting.
If this would be done I'll gladly post a report on the site.
So my question is: would there be interest in this comparison? As I see it the only problem is to gather a se of M5s. Correct?
Here is the response from Stoptech:
Gustav, STOPTECH would be happy to participate in a test of Brake systems. But the test must be be properly structured, same stock M5 , same driver agreed on by both parties, each vendor starts with a new set of the same brand of tires, same friction mfg, stopping distances to be measured by an objective system such as the Stalker. There should be more data taken such as rotor temps via a contact Pyrometer and lap times and we need to define which systems are being compared. We are close to Willow and the streets of Willow are very hard on Brakes or we could consider Buttonwillow. I would also recommend we have a pro driver do all the tests and log subjective impressions as well as objective data. So who wants to volunteer their virgin M5 for this test? Movit and STOPTECH share the cost of the track rental. How about the M5 owner gets to keep the test brake system of his choice.
And here is from Movit / Ultimate garage:
"If anyone has any contacts at any car magazines for a brake kit comparison, I'll put up a set of front and rear Movit brakes to go head to head against StopTech's offerings. Ten back to back stops from 125mph (or higher) should be interesting. An independent test like this would help the consumer decide which brake kit to purchase for their car."
I've been following the brake discussion for some time, and would love to see an objective, head-to-head comparison.
If Road Atlanta would be an agreeable venue to the parties concerned, I've got a 'virgin' '00 beast waiting to be flogged!
The only mods I've done are to optimize the OEM hydraulics with high-temp fluid and stainless Goodridge lines (plus better pads)--but this would all be negated by each respective competitor's set-up. Poof!, a bone stock Beast!
Per the Stoptech post, two new sets of tires would be required for comparison purposes. Along with the track rental, that would be the responsibility of the manufacturer/distributor!
If you're serious about doing this and Atlanta works for you, I can be emailed at: duhl@aubreydaniels.com
Perhaps we could add this request to our list of items for the Summer Event. We could even get some media coverage out of it with a seperate test at Sears Point Raceway. I am sure we will not be on the track the entire day. I will pass this idea around and see if there is an interest.
If we can do this at Sears, it would have much more credibility if we used a "professional" driver, such as one of the instructors from Bob Russell Racing.
Thats Jim Russell Greg. I may be getting the Stoptechs soon. I have been talking to them and they are not quite ready to ship. We will be pretty booked at Sears on our Thursday but I think everyone wants to see head to head tests. I think it will happen. I may help, anyone else out here? I know somebody else on this board is ready for Stoptechs but they wouldn't say who. Well, who?

greg,
Are you calling us unprofessional?! I agree with your comments here.
