oil consumption, the solution ?

for years now everyone on this board is complaining about the oil consumption ,i don't have mine very long, about 2 months now,and yes, every time i checked the oil it was half the dipstick,so i filled it up again, next drive ,same thing, so, got to the basement looking for all my bmw magazines, there was an article in one of those from hartge, putting the M5 engine in the E46, talking about the engine the guys says"it's a great engine, some people are complaining about oil consumption which is in fact overfilled oil who burnes"
so i read my manual for the 52 time, and yes, there it is!
you have to check your engine oil when the engine is hot, and before checking the level you must let turn the engine at idle, for at least 20 seconds, this to give the additional G-force electrical oil pumps the time to remove the oil in the cilinderheads back to the oil pan.

i tried it for 2 weeks now, and i have no oil consumption, this works well for my car.

on the other hand, a car who burnes oil is getting blue smoke out of the exhaust, i bett non of you has ever seen this on the M5, (i didn't)so , i think that's it !!!!

Please use Castrol EDGE 10W-60.

DO NOT use the Edge Sport 10W-60

Have you seen any evidence of Oil leaks in the engine bay and underneath ?

What is the condition of you Oil Separator Hoses. Please consider also renewing or at least cleaning out your Oil Separators also.

Good Luck !

Valve cover grommets? Especially the three around the timing chain cover (front portion of the cover)? What about valve cover gaskets?

When my dealer said it was "normal" for my M5 to burn quart every 300 miles I seriously constidered puting an oil tank in (like a gas tank).

BMW's rated maximum, permissible, oil consumption rate is :

416.66 Miles per Litre.

If you are under BMW warranty and your car drinks at a higher rate than above, they supply and fit a new engine for you for free !

This is what you should be using for oil:

Castrol EDGE 10W-60 for special BMW M-Series engines

Take advantage while its on 25% discount

Also, look into gaskets, grommets and oil separators as was mentioned above.

Besides Kumaran's and Tiago's awesome and excellent advice, I would have your valve cover gaskets AND the associated cover grommets replaced then go back and reanalyze your oil consumption. I will bet that your oil is leaking out rather than being consumed and after this maintenance you will see a reduction in oil loss.

Oil separators are part of the positive crankcase ventilation system and provide a vent path for crankcase pressure. This air is usually laden with oil and the separators are supposed to coalesce this oil vapor, allowing the oil to drain back to the crankcase, while the air, now free of oil, is directed into the intake plenum.
