Rogue SSK, WSR, mounts, RP installed

Installed the Rogue Octane Short Shifter Kit (SSK)with Weighted Selector Rod (WSR), Rogue transmission mounts, and Royal Purple (RP) Synchromax.

This was the first install for me. Once the car was on jackstands, it took about 90 minutes total. If you do this, you might consider doing these three together, as the shifter is easier to access with the transmission cross-member removed for the mounts. And the belly pan has to come off anyway for all three mods.

The tranny took the full two bottles.

Impressions? Pretty cool! As others have reported, the effort is slightly more. But to make a point, I let my 7-year old daughter do the shifting during a drive tonight. She had no trouble at all, and had a blast!

Subjective to be sure, but it seems the synchronizers are now better living up to their name. The 1-2 shift (especially) seems to have smoother gear engagement, and for some reason the clutch release/gas pedal dance necessary for a smooth shift was not nearly as tricky anymore. I don't see how the shifter could possibly ever rattle or buzz. It's solid!

*Click* ... *Click* ... *Click* ... *Click*

Kinda reminds me of a motorcycle shifter now.

Driving down the road, put your beast in third and nail it, and watch the shifter move from the torque. With the new tranny mounts, it hardly moves at all anymore. Try that with your soft stock tranny mounts, and watch your shifter squirm!

The next test will be the Missus. She doesn't know I changed it out, and I'm not telling her. Let's see what happens.

Overall I would recommend these mods, they appear to be VERY well built and also seem to be an excellent value. I got all the stuff from Dave Z. (of course).

-Bill

I know exactly what you mean. On friday I was getting my throwout bearing, well thrown out for a new one, and the dealer had a CPO 2002 540 in the showroom. I sat inside the car and started going through the gates, man the shifter was everywhere. Super long throws, sloppy movement. I was so glad to get my car back to feel what shifting is all about. Even the master tech commented that my 540 was the best shifting car he's driven.

Yep. Your experience squares with mine. Only difference is I chose the UUC shifter instead but still use the Rogue WSR. The overall combination with the RP fluid and Rogue tranny mounts is great.

"Is it the sounds that make a BMW a BMW? A BMW is designed to be heard, felt, experienced. So our engines sing. Our steering talks back. And we insist on offering manual transmissions in nearly all our models for drivers who crave them. The result is an almost telepathic oneness with the car. Just as surely as you can hear a BMW, a BMW hears you."

Hi Nick! I'm afraid you'll have to wait a couple of days. The next order of tranny mounts was due this week, so it might be Monday or Tuesday before they arrive. I'll send you a tracking number as soon as the order ships.

Did a shifter, big brakes, clutch delay valve (non- M5), Dinan CAI, and a BMW NAV OS update today on Dan Lin's 2001 540i/6. Long day, but very satisfying.

No worries! I haven't got the time to install them for at least a week or two anyway.

Way to go Bill

I am glad I "convinced" you to do this.. Did I call it right or what?

Everyone should experience the SSK in some form or another.. I am convinced that those who do, will never go back to shifting a regular 'box again..

Anyhow (not wanting to hijack the thread).. I am going to be driving down to the BMW DE School.. I want to see how the car will treat me after 10 - 12 hours of seat time..

Looking forward to meeting you and your wife..

Yes you did, Andre, and thank you for doing so.

It's going to be tough going back to the factory setup at the DE. Hope I don't bust their shifter off. Can't wait though. Man, are we going to have fun!
