Gearshift making a clinking sound/feel - The Unofficial BMW M5 Messageboard (m5board.com)

Over the last few weeks I started developing a funny sound whenever I would shift into gear. It would happen only when I made a lateral left-to-right motion with some force while in gear. I would feel and hear a clinking sound. Any idea what this could possibly be? I'm going to take the M5 to the dealership to get it checked out. I also have the autosolutions SSK kit but I'm not sure if those two are related.

Hey Jason,

Sorry to hear you have a problem.

Do you have the Transmission Mounts? If your experiencing this feel and noise because of the flex and rollover under load, maybe the Mounts will fix your problem?

OH you're talking about your M5. Thought u ment on the MINI its normal on the MINI.

Thanks to Don, we managed to trace the clinking sound/feel to a loose shiftknob. It's not the shift rod linkage but the shiftknob which apparently has come loose. Should be covered by warranty. I'll get this taken care of on Thursday.

Jason,

Is it a creaking noise? Something like a cracked plastic noise?? I 've heard it on mine after I had a smog check and saw the guy having trouble getting it into reverse gear. It comes and goes with the air temperature. What is the fix for your noise?
