Buggy Nav Software 3-1/62

What a pain. I drove from Philadelphia to Chesakeake VA and back over the last couple of days (enjoyed that !) and the Nav software that was installed a few weeks ago would keep resetting itself -- displaying the BMW logo screen, prompting for whether I wanted to continue guidance and then, a couple of minutes later, resuming.

Each time it reset itself (more than a dozen times each way) it would lose the scale and volume settings.

You'd think that they would test this stuff before going live. It's lucky that these software engineers are not writing programs for aircraft !

I think that is your unit, and not the software. Try reinstalling the software. Also, make sure your map disk is clean and readable. Maybe it can't get the data from your map disk, it keeps trying, and resets.

Also, since I did not install the software, I would have to go back to the dealer and have them reinstall. Note the new software version.

I'm fairly sure it's the hardware and not the software .. I run the same software without problems.

In my old 528i I had the VDO system installed which is basically the same (just software differences) and it would lock up, reset and do weird things all the time.

there is definitely something different with this software because I ran the prior version for two years and have never seen this happen before.

could even be a loose conection. Find every connector back at the unit in the trunk, and simply unplug and replug it. Sometimes connectors develop a tiny bit of corrosion that creates an intermittent open circuit - a bit of wiggling breaks it up and makes everything well again - sometimes for a while, sometimes forever.
