OK, I just spent a 1/2 day cleaning and waxing the beast and was thinking about this post. Here are a couple of my favorites that i picked up from some of you over the last 18 mos.
Tape the black moldings before applying wax:: It takes a few minutes but saves you from having to remove the wax from them
Porter Cable #7336 6" variable speedrandom orbit with various accessories Takes the grunting out of waxing
Pinacle Souveran glides on and wipes effortlessly off.
You are most probably refferring to polishing. I still only do this by hand. Machines do not do a better job, they just do a faster job. I'm in no hurry.
Use only high quality cotton towels from feildcrest.
Some have also had good success with micro fiber towels.
Use back and forth motions as appossed to circular. It reduces the chance of swirling the surface.
With ALL of the above steps use extremely light pressure. In fact let the towel, wash mitt, or applicator do the work. Applying pressure can also cause swirls. Resist the temtation to apply pressure.
I think I'm all through using cotton. The micro-fibre waxing and polishing cloths from Griot's Garage are simple amazing. They never seem to "load up", and make the job sooo much easier.
This weekend I did two cars with HD-Cleanse then Zymol blue. I like the Zymol because you don't let it dry before removing it, so it wipes right off. Did the windows, too.

Hey Bill, I used to use Zymol & Swissol. Both great products. But imagine something smoother, clearer and easier to apply and effortless to glide off, and you have Pinnacle Souveran. I won't go back to Zymol now. Zymol feels griity in comparison.
You don't wait for PS to dry either. Straight on and straight off.
Although some guys at Autopia claim the NEW haze method is better. I tend to disagree as it makes it a small effort to get it off.
All I believe they achieve is an early curing time.
after lots of online looking i think the best is using the sealants like the klasse all-in-one (prewax cleanse/polisher) then klasse superglaze; this will last a good 6 months and give UV protection a carnauba won't..
then on top of that go with a carnauba which will give extra looks but come off in a couple months, though for protection you'll still have the sealant underneath..
BTW i've been having a major problem with birdshit. The parking lot at work is surrounded by trees some of them berry producing (whats the fancy word for that?) which have resulted in major bird bombs almost daily. Since i already have some permanent looking **** stains in the clearcoat (haven't tried to polish them out) i've gotten into the habit of using the local auto powerwasher as a quicky wash. It works good on individual stains though after a while you do need some sort of spongework, and if you douse real well with the "spot-free rinse" you really don't get any spots despite the air-dry, which is nice. Has anybody heard of problems with the powerwash, as in it creates swirls, peels off the wax, hurts your paint, anything? (not that i'll believe it)
i've only recently discovered this stuff and while i surely appreciate how fantastic the above cars look after a full day 'spa' treatment i'm very pleased with the results i get from a 75-90 minute full wash and wax using klasse all in one. i've never used a product so easy to apply and take off...and i have plenty of time to do other stuff.

I always use an orbital buffer for removing spyder and swirl marks. Meguirs has an number of polishes that work very well at removing these. I have been using Pinnacle wax and have been very pleased with it on my Imola Red color.
If you are concerned about wax on the black door moldings, just pop them off. It is very easy and it does not hurt them. This is much easier than taping them.
I use really good micro-fiber towels from Meguirs for the wax removal.
I probably wax three times a year and the car, with the exception of the chips, looks as good as new.
here's a quote from a website selling the stuff, it's called all in one as it cleans, polishes and seals.
'Klasse All-In-One is much more than a simple wax, it is a real polish. It contains chemical cleaners for removing oxidation, old wax build-up, road tar and insect residue.
Klasse All-In-One Polish is also an acrylic-based paint sealant that provides long term protection against UV and salt damage. It is heat resistant and elastic by nature. All-In-One contains no abrasives or silicone and lasts an incredible 6 months.'
i'm not affiliated, just really like the stuff. they also make a glaze that you can use on top off the a.i.o. but i don't bother, the car looks great without it.

I just heard from a pro detailer who uses the stuff that it is a cleaner only. But hey, if you like it that's all that matters. Alot of people use it, but most that I know top it with something.
Here is a quote:
The problem there is that AIO is not a synthetic wax. There is no wax in it at all. It is a cleaner product. It will clean off the oxidation and general crud that washing doesn't get rid of. Its not meant to shine or protect much. Its just a cleaning product. It does have some minor protection qualities in it, but that is not the purpose of using it. If you want your car to shine with a synthetic then you should use one that is meant to shine. SG or Platinum or Zaino or a number of other products topped with a good carnauba will shine and look way better than just AIO.
I am preparing my car for a show next month right now. it is in the prep stages as far as polishing goes. Right now most of the car just has AIO on it. I still have some work on the roof to do and then its ready. There isn't a difference in shine between the areas with AIO on them and the areas without it. The shine comes from the sealant. AIO does darken the paint just a little and that may account for some slightly deeper reflections, but you'd really have to see it side by side with a bare surface to notice that. Trust me. AIO is not the creme de la creme of the shine products. It gets much better than that. If you top AIO with a carnauba then you can't layer any more sealants on (sealants won't bond to carnauba). Get 3 or 4 layers of SG on there first and you'll see a world of difference.
rebel1, thanks for the 'detailed' explanation....hiha
that being said, my comments were from a lazy man's perspective only. my car detailing day involves a 90 minute wash and a.i.o. application followed by a 3 hour mtn. bike ride with my wife and son or a round of golf......
First, Dont believe everything Sal Zaino says, he is well known for misleading people.
Second - P21S can be applied in 20min and looks very good overtop of AIO.
Third - According to many people, AIO does give some protection, the general consensus being 2 months.
and Fourth, check out www.autopia.org for more information

Cohenfive:
Your welcome. Just passing along info. I have never used it myself so I really don't know.
**** right to the "SPA TREATMENT"
Jademonkey;
You are right. P21S is a great product! I currently have it on my beast. It looks stunning. I use Zaino on my pewter truck. The metalic color simply "pops" out at you, looks fantastic!
BTW the quote I posted was from Autopia. I frequent that site, very informative. Like I said though I really don't know AIO at all, just passing along the info I have read.
