Saturday morning, my wife and I were rushing to the Audi dealership in Houston so that we could pick up her car before the service department closed for the day. I pulled up into the dealership I found myself parking behind an odd looking Audi. I quickly noticed the RS6 badge and became excited. This was my first sighting of an RS6 and I was eager to speak with the owner.
Once out of my car, I walked around the Audi and noticed that the darn thing was a station wagon. This simply did not make sense. A guy about my age, late 20s-early 30s, came out and I immediately approached him to ask about this odd vehicle. He explained that it was indeed an RS6 Avant which he had recently imported for his friend. Talk about a sleeper! Unfortunately, I had arrived in my 7 series instead of my M5, damnit. He didn't have any information regarding the performance differences between the wagon and the sedan, but can you imagine pulling up almost anything in a wagon and blowing the doors off of it?!?
We all know the difficulties of importing vehicles such as this, but despite LENGTHY waits at the assorted state and federal agencies, the guy had it registered and inspected. He claimed to have about $120k into it at the time. That's a good chunk of change, and particularily worrisome since the car was at the Audi dealership b/c of an error with the tire pressure light and a large section of the rear bumper which had become detached from the left, rear quarter panel. HOWEVER, that's one slick grocery-getter.
The Audi new car manager said that the Audi had no plans for importing the Avant.
I think I saw one of these at a recent track day in Portland.
I noticed this Audi which accelerated like a bat out of hell, but which cornered like a pig. It had tires that would squeal and screetch at the slightest hint of cornering. Several people commented on the annoying noise, and the joke was that it even managed to squeal going down the straightaway.
Anyway, someone said it was a RS6 that had been imported from Europe. Since it was a station wagon, I figured they were mistaken. Maybe not!

I won't say that Audi's in general are known for their sports car like handling, now the RS Audi's are another story and here in Europe they can be a challenge in the arena they were intended to compete i.e. ruling the left lane at speed.
There are times when more room is nice and times when more HP is also nice. While I like the A6 Avant size the real beast in the Audi line is the new RS A4 Avant with the same engine in a smaller/lighter package.
Last comments with regard to hauling a** and getting HP to the road. Audi has had a long history ruling the world rally league, they have one of the best awd systems; you don't get there by making cars that corner like a pig.

good point Ken... tires squeeling does not necessarily denote anything bad...
Audi are world leaders .. look at Le Mans - nothing can catch them. In World Rallies they have proven themselves time and again. pity they do not compete tehre now, I think they could do very well again. It does take some adjustment fordrivers of RWD cars to get familiar with the 4wd Audis... you can get the power down so much more quickly.. and the car doesn't always drift well through corners.. Oh well.. enough of me defending Audi....
