Has it always been the case that Luxury interior = no shades

Has it always been the case that the sunshades are only available with the sport interior, or is this a new BMW ordering quirk for 2003?
i.e. could you get shades with the lux interior in 00,01, or 02?

It seems counter intuititive - I would think that those that want the luxury interior would want as many luxury gadgets as possible - that's the camp I fall into. Perhaps BMW thinks otherwise.

I am sure that some of the 'older' M5 members can speak about configuration of early model years in the US. Here however, we have always been able to order the sun shade with either interior.

Yes, it has been that way for the whole E39 run. I think it was an issue of clearance for the rear door manual ones. Above the trim on the rear doors is leather (for '00) or synth. leather ('01-03).

Evidently, the addition of this covering doesn't allow for room for the shades to come up on the inside of the window. At least, that's what I've been led to believe. Not sure if anyone with Lux interior ever tried to retrofit the side shades.

I do believe that there was one fellow who successfully retrofitted his M5 with the sunshades. I can't recall who it was though.

I also believe that it was in fact possible to get the sunshades on older M5's prior to '01 as long as you didn't get the extended leather option with the luxury package.

Correct, you might have luxury interior but you don't have leather door panels and dash if you have the sunshades. In '00, you could order the M5 in many combinations, but in a nutshell:

Luxury: Extended Leather or All Leather

Sport: Extended Leather or All Leather

In '01+ this was simplified: Sport got extended leather while Luxury got all leather. Shades were available on sport since the sport did not come with all leather interior.

Hence you are right, it is possible to get shades on a '00 with Luxury interior since you had the option of ordering the all leather interior.

Wrong, Wrong, Wrong..... I have the luxury interior on my 2000. It has the sunshade. I ordered the sunshade on my 2002 and BMW NA refused to allow it on a luxury interior. You CAN order it any where else in the world. I checked in Paris and London while there on layovers. You needed to have the M1CR vs M3CR interior. That way the thickness of the leather wouldn't matter.

Instead of getting my number 7 BMW in a row, I now have a Porsche, due BMWNA deciding that they know what I want more then I.

Is that any way to run a company??? I guess they think it is!

Stem,

Please read Chris Foote's post carefully. He has pointed out that there were two types of "leather" options available. I mistakenly mentioned that the sunshades were not available with the "extended leather" options when it was in fact possible. It was not possible to get the sunshades with the "all leather" options. Pretty confusing wasn't it. No wonder BMW chose to simplify things after that.
