Climate control issues

Does anyone else have this problem; when I get in the car, the climate control settings are almost always different than the way I left them. They seem to reset to the settings I had two trips ago. I tried searching on this topic but didn't find anything relevant. I want to know if this is normal before I ask the dealer to check it out.

Thanks.

Climate control. Do you use the Independent ventilation system? Do you know what it i

John,

It is not oyur imagination. That is exactly what the climat control does. I have the shop manual for our car and it says this feature can be programmed by BMW. If you have the shop manual(I downloaded from a link from BMW) on page 96 under the heading of Controls/Automatic climate control, third paragraph on the left hand side of the page it explains that this indeed is programmed by BMW. It does not say what the various options are when programming.

Mark

BTW - since I was in the section regarding your question, Does anyone use the Independent ventalation system? It looks pretty interesting. I do not know if this is available on the MY00, but it is on the MY01 and up.

Mark,
Thanks for the info; that is a big help. As for your questions, I am not sure what the independant ventalation system is. Sorry.

Thanks again.

My climate control settings do not change on their own. The settings stay put, however my fan seems to have a mind of its own-- it sometimes chooses to blow on "high", notwithstanding that the fan setting remains on "low." I seem to recall others on this board experiencing a similar phenomenon.

The "fan has a mind of its own" problem is a very common problem with e39, e46 and X5s (what e is that?)

Go to your dealer and tell them you need a new "Final Stage Unit" for the climate control system. (it is also called a Final Stage Resistor Pack)

The parts department of my local dealer keeps 25 of them in stock! (Gee, do you think they have a problem?) The part has been revised 3 times since my car was made!

The dealer can set the climate control to be key-specific, so that it returns to the last setting when you last used the specific key. If you are using the same key, and it is setting the AC for 2 trips ago temp, it is broken and needs to be fixed by the dealer. If you may have switched keys, and used the key you last used 2 trips ago, it worked like it should.

The bad final stage unit is the other problem, as others have pointed out -- fairly common -- poor supplier quality control.
