Post Clunking sound while turning??

While driving my car this morning I noticed that while turning and driving across a slightly uneven surface, a noticeable "clunk" sound emanates from the front of the car. Sort of a dull "pop".

Have any of you experienced this? What part of the suspension could be doing this? I have not had any unusual experiences or accidents that could explain this symptom.

I get the same noise when winding down my underground parkade. Sounds like a suspension or drivetrain sound. It isn't driving me nuts yet.

alpywhite,

At first the "clunk" sound happened very infrequently like yours. Went for a drive today and the sound was louder and it happened more often. I'm going to have to take it in to the dealer real soon to have it checked out.

John--

If it is a "popping" noise, can you feel an accompanying pulse through the steering wheel? If so, I would suspect a bad wheel bearing and/or incorrect hub torque situation.

Is the noise at the RPM of the tire rotation, like a brake pad rubbing a warped rotor? Such a sound wouldn't be as pronounced as a "popping" sound.

ivory1,

The sound is not continuous - only once in a while during slight turning. An uneven surface will cause it to happen more often. Sounds like the front left side only.

I've also got it, when descending down steep grades at a snail's pace. Sounds like something in the spring area.

Re: Clunking sound while turning??

Sorry to resurface an old thread. I am wondering if anyone found a solution. I have about the same problem. Mine is only at slow speeds. 20 mph and less. When going faster or stopped it doesn not happen.

Re: Clunking sound while turning??

I started a post on this topic awhile back in regards to my popping noise on my 00' M5. BMW ended up replacing my steering column hose (I could be way off, but it was a hose of some sort, I'll dig into the exact name later).
That seemed to have fixed the problem, but it is back again.

It seems to only happen when I leave my car outside in cold temperature. And it only last for 5 min or so until the car warms up. Really, really weird. I am going to take it in again on Thursday. I'll let you know.

Re: Clunking sound while turning??

Sounds like bad control arms to me. This is a common problem on X5s. It starts just on turns or over bumps (My X5 started just when turning left at 8K miles). It then progresses to noise that sounds like a plastic straw going up and down through a plastic top on a plastic cup of Coke over every bump or turn.

Re: Clunking sound while turning??

Serb thanks for the reply. Thursday sounds cool. Can you ask the BMW dudes how intensive it is to replce said hose? I am a mechanic so I am capable.

Digi. Is it the control arms themselves or is it the bushings? I would think that control arms should not be going bad this early.
