Changing the finish on my wheels.....

Hey guys, since I just bought my 2000 M5 (2 weeks ago) I have to do a couple of things to it to bring it up to snuff.
One is that the finish on the wheels is pretty bad. Lots of baked on brake dust and discoloration.
So, I have two choices. New wheels or refinish the ones I have. If I refinish the ones I have I'm thinking about going either with a standard silver with a clear coat or then I started thinking about black with a clear coat.......my M5 is silver.

What do you guys think??? Silver or Black?

Silver. Black doesn't look right, imo.

Didn't BMW have a kind of shadow chrome available for the M5 wheels? Maybe that would look good...

That is the standard finish for all the M5/M3 wheels.

Don't go with black! Looks horrible from what I remember. I'll try to dig up a picture that I saved a while back.

Take it from someone who went the painting route, dont bother. I was very disapointed with the results and ended up getting a new set.

imo nothing looks as good as the OEM shadow chrome. I would sell the ones you have and buy a new set.

If the price is right, you will find a buyer easily. There are several outfits that chrome our older rims and re-sell them for a profit.

The wheel exchange in NC is one such outfit.

Check Ebay.

Cheers

Oh no, I'am not talking about painting at all. I have a local place that does powdercoating and it is OEM quality. I have used them several times over the years. Iam just not a huge fan of the shadow chrome or what ever its called. And Im ALL OVER ebay (thats where I found the M5!!)

That's exactly what we saw on that other M5 that had black wheels. They were powdercoated. Looked horrible! But who knows, maybe you'll like it.

Thanks Jason, I must need new glasses, I could swear I have seen standard silver finish and shadow chrome sets on different M5's in my neighbourhood. Must be the sunlight..

No problem Bill. Your eyes may not have been playing tricks on you after all. Apparently there have been different shades of shadow chrome on M5's so you might not be that far off the mark.

Have you considered chrome? I've seen chrome and it looks simply amazing! Has a lot of that "wow" factor going for it.

Is there a way of duplicating the factory finish? If so, what is it and where do you have it done?

Thanks, John
