why not velocity stacks?

hey everyone,

i havent thought this out at all, but i was just wondering why no one has done away with the two air boxes and attached 8 air cleaners to the individual intake trumpets. there must be a particular reason that no tuner has done this. are the MAF sensors attached behind the air cleaners? if so, is this the reason no one has attempted to do away with the stock airboxes altogether? if it was possible, it should net some pretty decent hp gains if we could just throw on some velocity stacks and fabricate some type of cold air intake system to prevent the trumpets from ingesting the warm underhood air. just an idea!

ernie,

good thinking but bmw has foiled your thoughts...the Mafs are located directly after the stock airboxes (in their own little containers) and so you would have to not only get rid of those but then retune the ECU to let it know what is going on...

All in all...just a headache that not one tuner on earth is going to mess with

Dinan has modified velocity stacks. I believe they claim hp gain if you put that and their throttle bodies together.

triflo,

thanks for the speedy reply! i pretty much figured that that was the case with the MAF sensors, i havent had the time to look under the hood and reacquaint myself with exactly where everything is. it would have been awesome to open up the hood and see 8 carbon fiber intake trumpets. that would be bad *ss!

although dinan does make velocity stacks they are virtually identical in appearance and function to the stock units. i was hoping for a completely different design with a modified engine cover to allow for the new velocity stacks. the hp gains are minimal when compared to the gain which could be achieved by doing away with the airboxes. oh well, i guess you cant have it all...
