Spare tire

I'm going to Toronto (about 1200K, round trip) this weekend, and was thinking about carrying a spare just in case. What size would be OK??

My last trip to Toronto was with the M3 I just sold, and I never really thought about a spare, because at the time I only had 5K on those tires.

Now that I have the M5 with 11K miles, I seem to be a little concerned.

Any ideas??

Sorry if this question has been asked before....

Cheers
Rocky

double check but

If I recall, when owners fit snow tires, on the stock wheel, they go with a 245 sized tire all around. I imagine the profile would be 40 or 45..? This will still fit the fronts easily and although smaller than the rears, will do until you can get to a shop to replace the damaged tire..

In a 17 inch wheel I know 235/45 tires are used in a snow tire application.

Hope that helps...

Also, call tirerack.. they will obviously have a better sense

I was quite concerned as well and started a thread a while back (which followed upon umpteen other threads) about spare tire strategy. The upshot (as suggested by one of the very helpful people who replied) was that a 245/45 R 17 on a 17" wheel (of course) would come closest to the rolling radius of the stock tires and could be used, gingerly, to replace either a front or rear flat.

I'm going to be ordering 4 Borbet Type Es (17X8) with 245/45 R 17 Dunlop snows for the winter and I'll be using one as a spare during the rest of the year.

Good Luck.

I bought a stock M5 front wheel and tire from a guy who sold his M5 before he needed to use it. Fits nicely under the cargo net. Also bought an jack for an e39 using the BMWCCA discount.

I opted for a stock rim because I got a good deal on it. If I ever damage a front wheel, I'm covered.

Mini-wheel

Hi, I am sure threads have already covered this but I was wondering why BMW can't run on pancakes spare wheels (up to 50mph) as other brands -even heavy cars like Jags- do.

Any thoughts ? pan cake wheels can be easy to take along on long trips.

Have fun

Thanks for all the replies...

The consensus seems to be, to either go with a 245/45 R17 rim and tire, or a stock front rim and tire. I feel a stock front rim and tire would make more sense.

Thanks once again....

Cheers
