DSC Off+Sport On=Fun For My M5(And Me) At High Speed AutoX At Blackhawk

Just wanted to let you all know I had a blast at my first highspeed autocross on Sat the 17th. This was my first time "tracking" my M5 and I had to put up with a nervous me and a nervous family.

Started out driving 1.25 miles through the fog to arrive at the track later then I wanted to. Registered and attended the regular driver's meeting and then the novice driver's meeting. You had to have your hand stamped to prove you had been at the regular meeting and had to show that stamp when lined up in the false grid. Next I made a quick trip to find a place to set up and unload the car. Then it was time to go through tech. Finally it was time for me to actually get on the track. They sent the novices out with instructors during the first group practice and then we were out on our own during the second practice.

The family showed up around noon just before I was ready for my first timed lap. The husband absolutely blanched when I told him I was going to run w/o DSC. I told him he had to trust me and it was fine. Someone did run into a concrete wall and it was not uncommon to see drivers running off the track and spinning around coming out of turn 7 and in other place on the track.

The course is 1.95 miles long with 7 turns, two of which are 90 degree turns. I had 3 timed runs, the last being my fastest at 1:39.112. My M5 absolutely loved it and behaved just fine as did I. And they had GoJo in the bathroom soap dispenser. Plus the M5 was a hit--people liked to check it out.

Pics and, when they are posted, official results to follow.

Thanks for everyone's support!!!!

Anita

Hey Anita.. that is great... !

I will be doing the same thing in my area (Lime Rock) when I finally get the time to take off.. MY biggest obstacle is my 14 month old son who I only really get to see over weekends..

It is hard to justify a whole day away from the family.. and he is still taking 2 naps a day... so tuff to take him along.

But it is something I have to do.. maybe soon after I get my exhaust fitted.

Andre,
I hope you get to Lime Rock--I understand about family. My son is 11 and I'm just getting started doing the driving thing. I gotta say after complaining before hand, that my kid ended up liking the track because they had a good snack bar!!!!

Running an autocross (or any spirited driving) in an M5 with the DSC on is an absolute exercise in futility. You'd be faster in an old 524td...considering how intrusive the DSC is at even the slightest wheelspin!

Glad you enjoyed it. Now you need to open track the car, where it is much more in its element than on a tight autocross!

Sanjay

PS...ironically, this was my 201st post, so the DSC is finally "off" on my bmwm5.com account!

Good job Anita! I knew you'd have a blast and you were right to turn off the DSC and learn to drive just short of where it would kick in and you should be fine. Can't wait to see your pics!

Ok, I'll bit

Anita,

So why did you like the GoJo so much in the bathroom?! Does this mean you were getting dirty with engine oil? Please tell us you did not have to rummage around in the dirt with your M5.

Sounds like you had a great time and no dents or scratches. How did your 4 point harness work for you? Does the tape come off the car with out any residue?

Bring on the pics.

Mark
