What are people doing about flaking aluminum trim?

Hello everyone,

I'm finding it increasingly more surprising at how many M5 aluminum trims are beginning to flake - even with <20k miles! I'm wondering what, if any, the current solution is. My shop has a relation with a company here locally that if there is enough interest I may be able to come up with a very high quality dash trim kit for the M5 that I guarantee will not flake or peel. I can also offer a variety of finishes including a carbon fiber look, aluminum look, etc.

My 2000 isn't flaking. Could it be due to something I'm not doing? Cleaning chemical or hand lotion? Where is yours flaking? What do you clean it with?

I got the same question as Philip. While I don't have the aluminum trim myself I haven't seen a BMW here with that problem. Personally I thought that the plastic had that color impregnated in it rather than a cover.

On the US (don't remember Germany) M5 with the sport interior, the standard trim that accents the top half of doors and dash is a plastic strip that is made to look like aluminum instead of wood. You can also get wood as a no cost option or if you get the lux trim, the wood is changed to walnut.

Not a problem, I have learned a lot as a student from you and the other Swede's on the board.
Are you getting that warm weather yet?
I had a late evening drink outside for you last week wondering how much longer it stayed light in Sweden.

Hey Guys, it gets dark here at 17.30 Hrs now as we are going into winter.

The aluminium trim is on a 540. They take that trim, and put a tinted film on it, and call it Titanium for the M5's.

It is a lot easier to scratch the tint.

I like the sound of Real C/F replacement rather than look-a-like.

Look Matte, both you and I are now students to Mark
Thanks for correcting me there Mark, now I can see how it would flake while the aluminum used on the 540 and also three series is actual color of insert.
