HadE55 is correct. I have 2000 all black all leather exclusive. It is the real thing. 2001 models even have the stitching on the dash to appear to have all leather, but the upper dash is synthetic. We can compare at the LI meet if you'd like.

HadE55NowM5 is correct in his assessment. I have a question, though. Is there any recommended procedures for caring for the synthetic leather on the dash and doors. I looked through the manuals and wasn't able to find any information. Any help would be appreciated.
I don't disbelieve those who claim that the dash isn't leather, but I need a source please. As I said, it makes a big difference as to which type of treatment I use. Lexol doesn't do much for vinyl, and Vinelyx doesn't do much for leather. This is not an ego issue for me, I like my dash as it is whether it is leather or not.
Rich S,
If you still need a source more convincing than myself or our esteemed fellow member, HadE55NowM5, check with your dealer. He is obligated to give you the straight skinny.
I called my salesman today and he confirmed by reading from a bulletin dated 9/00, stating that with the Luxury interior, "the dashboard and upper door panels are covered in a synthetic material".
Your salesman should show you this bulletin if you ask. If not call mine at 818-505-7400 and ask for Paul Ghosn.
I don't know how else to convince you, except cut out a piece and send it out to a lab for analysis.
Italia,
As I stated in my original post, I asked my local service and sales rep, who asked the regional rep, who ALL said it was leather. The reason I asked them in the first place is because I have more faith in info from this board than I do from most sales/service reps. I will call your salesman. Thanks.
ok rich here's what you do....take a picture of your dash, show it to a cow and see if you get a dirty look
My friend who has a X5 from a major LA dealer was told at "his" dealership that m5 mirrors do NOT fold up and that was just a rumor. they dont have a clue and are just plain lazy when it comes to product knowledge.
BTW i need help ......what leather conditioner should i be using on the car???? lexol, hide food, etc etc??

Once you find the leather in your car, I recommend using Lexol, both the cleaner and conditioner. Their conditioner is the best, by far. Leaves leather very soft and smooth with a natural luster, not a phony shine and slick feel like some conditions I've tried.
An alkaline-free, special blend of emulsifiers, mink oil and synthetic lanolin to
safely clean all fine leather surfaces. It removes soil and stains without harming
the natural oils in leather. Will not cause leather to crack, shrink or dry out. Z-9
will restore leather surfaces to like new condition. Perfect for all leather products.
Excellent for vinyl too. After cleaning, Z-10 Leather in a Bottle[tm] Treatment
and Conditioner is recommended to keep the leather supple, soft, protected and
enhance the leather scent.
Z-10 "LEATHER IN A BOTTLE" TREATMENT AND CONDITIONER
Two years in the making and already rated number one in the industry. Z-10
Leather in a Bottle[tm] Treatment and Conditioner contains a perfectly balanced,
solvent-free blend of special oils and other natural nutritives, which penetrates,
softens and preserves the leather. We also added Ultra-Gard[tm] our total UV
protector (40) and our exclusive real leather oil concentrate. This feeds and
enhances the leather scent, to give your vehicle that great new leather smell.
Just wipe on and let dry, no buffing is necessary. It leaves a non-oily,
non-greasy, non-sticky, stain repelling, natural luster and restores the warm
supple, soft feel, and smell of fine leather. Does a great job on vinyl interiors and
dashboards too. One whiff and you will agree its Leather in a Bottle[tm]. This
product has no equal in the world.
Randy,
OK, I took the picture, found a cow, showed it to her, and she raised her hoof. Now is this a "thumbs up - way to go"(it's vinyl) or the one "finger" salute(it's leather). I'm still lost.
By the way, I've tried multiple different leather treatments before settling on Lexol. I've used it for the last few years in a climate that is extreme in the summer, and the leather in my previous MZ3, 540, and Land Cruiser were all great when I got rid of them.
