I don't believe there is any difference in DSC behavior based on sport button position. If there is, it would be news here.

My 540 the steering is nice and firm always. No Sport button. When you get out of it and into the Beast, in Non sport mode, the steering feels Limp. When you then hity the sports button, the steering feel is restored.

Having said that, I deliberately only drove the Beast for the first 2,030 Km without Sport mode on. I have gottem used to the softer steering. Then When I hit the sport button, INSTANNT difference. I understand what the previous comment was when they say it feels like the steering is going to lock.

This is your body and minds reaction to being used to applying a small amount of effort to turm. You get used to it, then when the sport button is pressed, sub conscienously you still expect to apply the same amount of force. BUT the sport button requires more physical effort to turn the stering, and feels momentarily that it won't move. It actually requires more muscular strenth.

Or perhaps its better to say that, when sport mode is off, their is no resistance to turn, and no muscular effort required. When sport is on, there is a very small amount of physical effort to turn the wheel.

The mind & body has been used to no resistance, and all of a sudden, for a split second until the muscles actual exert some amount of effort, their is a tiny split of a second that you think the wheel is not going to move. But it does. Your memory is just one step ahead, sending signals that the wheel normally moves with this tiny amount of effortlessness, and now a tiny amount of effort is required.

Summary, there most certainly is a difference in the steering.

At my DE last year, they had one of BMW's top tech guys there answering questions the night of the dinner. I specifically asked him if the sport button re-maps the DSC, and he said yes. He wouldn't get into detail, but he comfirmed that traction control is relaxed under sport.

I find that really hard to believe. DSC seems just as intrusive and unhelpful with SPORT on as without. Maybe even worse since the sharper throttle response lets the rears break loose more readily.

Okay, MIB has given a nice explanation of that "steering lock" feel -- I'm not worried about that anymore. But the "sharp throttle response" ... just not there. Maybe I expect too much compared to the cab? BTW, didn't get a chance to play with the Sport in the beasts at M School, since 1) it never really occured to me (too much data) and 2) other than heel-toe we used the beasts exclusively on wet tracks, and turning off DSC was challenge enough.

Any V8 is going to have slow throttle response compared to an M3. I never realized it until I got an E36 to take to the track. Now when I get back in the M5 I blip the throttle once, realize that it's not enough, and blip again so I can shift!

That could probably be fixed somewhat by spending a couple thousand dollars on a Dinan lightweight flywheel.

I think either (1) you have really strong forearms, (2) you never drive below 120 kmh or (3) there is something wrong with your Sport button. Sport should decrease the amount of power assistance on the steering below 120 kmh, above that it should be the same. On my car the decrease in assistance is quite noticeable. Because I commute through the gridlock of central London every day I leave Sport off because the softer throttle response makes it a bit calmer trying to deal with all the crazy scooter riders and van drivers. Out of the city while I like the improved throttle response of Sport and it does make matching revs going down through the gears easier, I don't like the stiffness of the steering. To me the initial stiffness just feels like the start of big time understeer (which I know it isn't) given I do a lot of miles with Sport off. Does anyone know if there is a "fix" that you can hack the Sport setting to only affect the throttle and not the steering?
