why i love the m5...trip this past weekend....

this weekend i travelled from the bay area to visalia, ca. to go to the state 'odyssey of the mind' competition that my son's team was in. it's 212 miles (thanks nav) from my house. on the return sunday night we left at 8 pm. my wife and son were asleep before we got to the freeway and were comfortably snoozing the entire trip. i was effectively alone in the car with the audio system on.

we made it home in 2 hours 45 minutes--my wife wakes up literally as we pull into the driveway and is amazed that we could make it home that quickly and undisturbed. she doesn't really like the car that much but gained a bit more appreciation after the trip....even she was bragging about it...

i know this isn't a race or 'i blew off such and such car' story but is indicative of the overall balance of the m5. there aren't many cars that provide the m5's degree of rapid, safe and comfortable transport.

now the question is whether to drive to ames, iowa in six weeks for the world competition??

I agree, a very versitle car. In fact, this weekend I had 4 boys all under the age of 6 in the back seat on the way to little league. Yes, 4 of them. Your M5 does not have 4 seat belts in the back seat?! Neither does mine, so two of the guys had to share.

I don't want to hear it. We only went a short distance and if I am not mistaken, I used to ride up on the top of the rear shelf when I was growing up and I am still alive! How about growing up with a VW beattle that did not even have seatbelts! Those were the days.

Anyway, my point being that I could fit 4 six year olds in the back seat. Try that with a Porsche TT.

You gotta love the little screams of "faster daddy" as you are leaving a stop sign. How about one of the ricer guys pulling up next to you and seeing your 5 and 6 year olds waving at him when he pulls up next to you at a light. Priceless.

Mark

Reminds me of my 1st trip through Germany with my wife. She would wake up and nag at me each time the speed went over 130/140 mph, I think BMW should have worked harder on the wind noise at high speed

cohenfive;
I also appreciate the crusing ability of the M5. I've done 450 mile trips with ease in her. I once did a 6 hour trip non-stop. It was only 280 miles but I spent nearly 2 hours to go 10 miles at an accident. I got to the hotel parking lot and felt like I could have driven 6 more hours.

PS: Congrats to your son on Odessey of the Mind. I am familiar with it. A good many years ago I saw my younger sister perform at a regional OM competition in Charlotte. Two teams from her school won the state and made it to the world finals in Denver that year.

YOU BET!

As far as I'm concerned, one of the best ways to look at the world is over the hood of an E39!

When I had my '00 540i/6, I took one long trip: Massachusetts to Florida and back. It was a series of visits to friends and family. The longest day behind the wheel was about 11 hours, and it was DELIGHTFUL! Just me, the CD changer, and Miss Mouth (the voice of the navigation system). Even better, I was leaving winter in New England behind -- the trip was in January, 2001. That itinerary was:

Friday night: Massachusetts > NYC
Sun: NYC > Central NC
Tue: Central NC > Spartanburg (just HAD to stop at the Z3 plant!) > northern FL
Wed: northern FL > southern FL
Fri: southern FL > central FL (overnight AutoTrain to DC area)
Sat: DC > NYC
Sun: NYC > home

Dayum...I'm home already??

(By the way, I covered 2,463 miles at an average speed of 65.72 MPH, at 24.6 MPG on that trip.)

In my M5, I took a long trip 27 days after delivery -- Massachusetts to southwest Ohio (Dayton) and back. I managed to get the 1200 mile service completed around 3 weeks after delivery, then headed out a few days later. I stopped in NYC on both directions. From NYC to Dayton was about 9.5 hours in each direction. What a nice way to spend a day! On that trip, I saw the highest outside temperature reading I've ever seen in any of my cars -- 104 in NJ and PA. The Beast just ignored it, roared along at 80MPH, and kept me cool and comfy all day long.

(On this trip, I covered 1,739 miles at an average of about 68 MPH, at 22.2 MPG.)

Needless to say on my second trip to germany I went alone (no she didn't dump me before )
