Angry My first stone chip!

I guess it was bound to happen, with my Colgan Bra in the trunk due to foul weather, a rock chip found it's way to the driver's side front edge of my hood. Can you ever see it with Carbon Black paint. The BMW paint is way too soft compared to my other auto's less than 2 years old and been driven summer/winters here in Minnesota. 800 miles and I get my first.

Maybe Xpel was the way to go ... who has any advice for chip repair on Carbon Black?

It's just a car

'It's just a car' is my new mantra.

I just got my '03 Imola Red, and the first thing I did was install the full frontal Xpel kit (great product, by the way).

Yesterday, at 500 miles on the ODO, I got a honkin' huge set of chips on the hood just ABOVE the XPel. Looks like they're down to metal, as well, and very obvious. I'd read the posts about the low durability of BMW paint, and am now a believer.

I feel for you, and share your pain.

I'm with you all on the fact that the M5 is "just a car" ... I also believe that the BMW paints, while beautiful, are too soft!

I just got some stuff named Langka, which works with manufacturer's touch-up paint.
I plan on doing an extensive test of the product. I'll post a report, with photos, when I'm done.
It's supposed to melt down the new touch-up paint so that it no longer forms the telltale bump. And leave the existing finish untouched. We'll see.
Stay tuned for details.

Best,
Bert

I just had the "Invisa-Shield" installed............

on my 2003 beast. I got the delux kit for the M5 body and the options kit for the 5 Series body. basically, i got whatever you could possibly slap onto the car, for total protection.
Lets see how things pan out, over time. Hopfully this treatment will minimize the chipping on my car. The whole thing cost me $1000.00 cash. here is the link:

ChildsM5...

Sorry to hear that. I've heard of this happening frequently. Those darn rocks are like cruise missles targeted for unprotected paint.

On a lighter note...
Congratulations on your new beast! I hope to see you cruising around the Portland freeways.
Keep checking the board because we'll be putting together an Oregon M5 meet in a few weeks. How about a nice drive to the Coast or up the Gorge?

Best,
Bert

OUCH!

ChipH - try a cracked windshield @ 404 miles - "...." just happens. Sorry to hear the news. I am still undecided between using one of the shield products or doing high end touch up paint repair. Our dealer was not big on the clear shield products due to yellowing and removal issues. On the other hand.......... I have had a couple of our 10 - 15 year old bimms repainted or some panels painted and they looked perfect - so......
Good luck - Rick

Sorry the hear your news. I feel the same pain. On my new "mini-beast", after 2weeks of ownership, I scratched the right side, front end of the front bumper because of a huge stone on a parking lot. There happened several scratches on the bumper mostly underside of it but I know its presence and kept blaming myself for a week. It would happen sooner or later but this happened too soon with no reason. Sometimes I think people die or have accidents and have big injuries for no reason. Keep telling myself not to worry, but can't help it.

However, reading this post makes me feel a bit better since I know, now, that I'm not the only one. After putting some more miles, I'll make that underside part of the bumper repainted just to feel better.
I can't say that it is just a car; it is our pride but just not forget that this kind of things are easy to repair. It is annoying, but it is impossible to use something in perfect condition for a long time. Sooner or later, something spoils your joy, including mine. But that is life, isn't it??
