Well, after 2 weeks without the beast, I pick her up this past friday. Here is what was replaced:
Cam Sensor Banks 1 and 2
VANOS Solenoids
They went through 2 tools, which added to the down time. Picked up the car and it felt better at first, but then, felt like it was not breathing right at higher rpms - almost like it was ******ed (cam timing, not the car although I am beginning to wonder). Today, guess what pops back on...SES light. I am so pissed right now. I will be taking her back tomorrow morning with no appointment and no reservation for a loaner. I will INSIST they give me one. Wonder what they will replace now...I tire of this, so much that I am not enjoying the car anymore. Still have yet to install that used Dinan Stage 3 setup I won in the auction and will probably throw that back up for sale. More to come...
It seemed from your other thread on this topic that they were going to replace your entire vanos system but according to this post it just seems to be cam sensors (intake or exhaust??) and vanos solenoids. Could you clarify on the work already done? It seems a growing group of us are experiencing similar problems so it would be helpful.
Thanks in advance.
P.S. - so far (100 mi) the replacement of the exhaust cam sensor has resolved my problems - full power and no ses light. I am hopeful.
I guess the heart of the VANOS, solenoids to control it, and the sensors are all that needed to be replaced - well, obviously not. Made a mistake and called the dealer on my way in and, wouldn't you know it, the tech that has been working on my car is off for a week. Not sure what to do at this point - demand a car and let mine sit for a week in waiting or just hold off. I really dont want to drive the car with it like this.
Wow is that frustrating. It seems like you need someone from higher up in BMW NA to start getting involved in this. I would demand a car 5 series or better until the tech returns to work on it and not let them have anybody else look at until then.
It shouldn't be your problem that the tech is gone for a week. And it shouldn't take multiple visits to get it right. Speak to the service manager, explain calmly, and then ask him what he is going to do. (In other words, a gentle way of saying you have no doubt the ball is 100% in his lap and you aren't happy.) If you don't get satisfaction quickly, then do contact BMWNA.
There may be a run of bad parts though - I took my car in recently for an oil leak - it turned out to be coming from oil getting past the o-rings on one of the Vanos solenoids so they replaced it. But they test drove it, the SES light came on, solenoid was bad, replaced it again. I've only had the car a few days since then but it seems to be running fine.

Dave,
Try clearing out the 'send' items in you PM box. They clutter up the box as well.
You deal with Rick Hendrick BMW right. I think that you should take your car someplace else for service to help diagnose the problem.
It does seem very frustrating to deal with these problems.
Do these guys at Rickhendrick BMW has a very good experience with M cars ?
