QUESTION: regarding rear diff. for the M5 compared to the Z8 rear diff.........
Hi Guys,
Can anyone shed some light on this, I'd like to know why BMW decided to install a 3.15 rear diff into our M5 cars and the BMW Z8 car has a 3.55 rear diff. Why didn't BMW put the 3.55 rear diff into the M5 car? Both cars ahve the same motor and I believe the transmission is the same but the rear diff. is very different between the two cars. Why is this?????
Any thoughts and or comments are greatly appreciated.

The Z8 has a 3.38 ratio. I dunno what the Alpina Roadster uses.

The Z8 has taller tires, 275/40 instead of 275/35, so it needed a shorter ratio.

just as an fyi- the transmission in the z8 is slightly different- its a shorter throw (~20%) and the engine is slightly modified- the oil dip stick is moved.
