Hardest decision ever....M5 vs M3
m3 would be new, everything i want, and somethings i dont want (smg)
m5 is sterling grey, 2002, black luxury interior, 24k miles and going for 60,400$. there are some paint imperfections (ie a couple tiny dents and paint chips and scratches)...but other than that its pretty nice, including a new clutch from BMW.
today me and my dad drove the m3...i loved that thing. but ****, getting in and out of that backseat was a challenge. we drove it good and hard and fast, and it put a smile on my dads face. we even got compliments from a group of guys.
we also test drove the m5 today (for the second time) and it was amazing. we even brought it home. just looking at the rear, imagining it was actually ours in our driveway, was a good feeling
but here is the catch. im younger, my dad is older. im into more sporty cars (m3) and my dad is into more room (m5). my dad said whichever car we get, i'll be the one doing most of the driving
keep in mind right now he has a 740i, and wow, the m5 inside looks very similar to it.
what do you guys think?
and i know u may be a little biased (bmwm5 board)
thanks

Having had the same choice when buying I
clearly went for the M5 as an engineer you
can see *debatable* that there was more
effort that went to the M5. The Torque itself
it worth it, it's for understaters who want an
oxymoronical car ..... who want a beast but
dont want to show it if you do get an M3 if you
want performance and not sacrafice any
convenience go for an M5 ....

Well....
The M3 is very common and since you are into sporty car go for the m3. Most people will know that it is one and thus you may get some crap in college if you drive it there.
What are you worrying about the backseat when you will be behind the wheel.
The M5 on the other hand is very stealth and has 4 drs. I like it because it will make me look important and a enthusiast at the same time. It has lots of tourque.
But the choice is simpy up to you. Either way you guys will have a great combo of cars.
I love when someone said" you can drive 150mph in the M5 while having a cup of coffee".
BTW... you said you were young. How young are you?

Tough decision to be in, I think that the M3 is a much better car for us youngsters to learnb and drive mainly because it is lighter more chuckable car...the M5 is a car that demands a lot of experience from its driver.. I myself prefer the M5 but given the choice right now i would go for a brand new M3 with SMG..
all the best

Ah, another question that is constantly asked.... M5 or M3 ... about as often as 911 vs M5.
I just don't get it, because the choice is crystal clear.

One other question for you. Who is paying for this car? I could not resist.

Go with the M5, for the engine alone.....The M3 just doesn't have the torque. Ask PTG which engine they would like to use in their race cars???? 1 guess??? The M3 is really cool looking but for my $$$$, the M5 trumps it in a big way......Besides, you can pick up Dinan Supercharged E-36 M3's for 32k that are much more exciting to drive than than the current M3.

I see about 20 M3's in boston everyday...but I can go for a week with out seeing another M5....M3's are also tanking in value, I have a dealers license and I had the opporunity to buy a 2002 m3 carbon black with cinniman 21000..loaded for 38,000$$$$ at auction. I should have grabbed it... I would definatley go forthe M5..by far the best car in the world.

To summarize:
If you want 4 doors and stealth, it's gotta be the M5
If you want a chuckable sports coupe it's the M3

i am....*gasp*... 19...
my dad is paying for the car.
i know i am young, but i know i can handle the power either machine puts out. both have incredible amounts of power, and i respect that a lot, so i don't think i would do anything to endanger myself or passengers.
thanks for opinions and concerns of my question so far.
if the car was soley for me, i would have ordered an m3 by now, but its also for my dad...and he likes to relax so the m5 will do him good.
i just came home from a M3 Vert testdrive. the vert didnt feel as good as the coupe. It almost felt unstable

M5's more unique here too, i've only seen about 4 E39 M5's ever, but I see a E46 M3 at least once a month.
seriously, not too many of the latest M's around town, or at least not where i drive.
