After asking a couple of times with the answear: "That is a normal sound", BMW finally admitted that the engine sometimes had a strange rattling noise at idle. They say that it was a chain tensioner in the Vanos system who needed adjustment. I'll pick up the car today....
A slight diesel noise will always be evident in the Vanos system. You'll never completely get rid of it. It shouldn't be really bad like an old diesel in horrible shape, but just noticeable.
If you get constant, heavy, and loud, diesel noise, you should get it checked out in my opinion. You may need one of the two 'fixes" available, or just an adjustment of some kind.

I don't know of two fixes, but there is a bulletin (TSB) on this issue. I performed the repair on a collegue's '00 M5 about 9 months ago. It was successfull in getting rid of the rattle. If your noise doesn't go away, post again here and I'll try and dig up the bulletin.
Actually, it seems enough people have this problem. I'll find it when I get to work tommorow and post along with part numbers, etc.

I'm pretty sure that chain tensioner doesn't have an adjustment...

I can't get it to load up right now for some reason.
Ok, no need for me to find the fix. It's all in the link above.

Like everyone else, I also have the rattling. The $tealer says it is normal! But then again my local $tealer is the worst, so I did not expect anything more
