469Bhp E55 vs 444Bhp RS6 vs 400Bhp M5 (long)

Im not sure if anyone on here wrote about this test so here goes..

Its fascinating to watch the speedometer needle of the E55 AMG. Not because its spookingly spindle-less but because it sweeps around the dial at such an incredible rate. If we have filmed it and you could watch it, you'd reckon the footage had been speeded up like a car chase in a bad film.

~The needle is still going strong as it swings for the last marking on the dial, 160mph, when the acceleration abruptly but smoothly tails off- we've hit the 155 mph speed limiter.

How fast would the E55 go if there was no limiter and the straight was two miles long ? 180 ? Easily 200 ? Possibly. A derestricted SL55 made monkeys of a bunch of supecars at a Nardo test organized by Auto Motor and Sport magazine, topping out 202 mph and proving the most accelerative to 170.

A couple of months ago we attachted our own VBOX timing gear on an SL55: 0-60 in 4.6sec and 0-150 in 24.0. Quick huh ? Yeah but the sober looking E55 gets to 150mp/h in just 22.8.

In at least one respect, the E55 redifines the term 'performance saloon'. In this class there isn't a quicker or more powerful four- door; with 469bhp the Merc has 25bhp in hand over its potent rival, the Audi RS6, and almost 70bhp over the iconic BMW M5. In the time the Mercedes takes to get to 150mph, the Audi and BMW have just passed 130mph. And in terms of torque the E55 is even more impressive, its incredible 516lbs ft, over 100lb ft more than the twin turbo RS6 and no less than 147lb ft (almost 40 percent) more than the normally aspirated M5.

~Another car that makes it look like a bargain is the Brabus EV12 that we drove back in issue five. The E55 is actually more accelerative than the 574bhp, 206mph Brabus (verified by the Guinness Book of Records as the fastest saloon car in the World ), and it costs half the price.

Compared with the SL55, the E55 has slightly lower power rating but that isnt the reason it cant quite match the SL's take off. It has narrower rear tyres *265/35ZR 18*, is almost 200kg lighter (weight helps traction), so with less launch bite, the E55 is a couple of tenths behind the SL up to 60 (4.8 vs. 4.6), but once traction has ceased to be an issue it closes the SL down. By 100 mph it has drawn level on 10.2 and by 150mph its over a second ahead.

Genuine supercars dont go much faster, so its no suprise that the Audi and BMW are left in the Mercedes' wake. They're pretty evenly matched, but with its 6 speed manual and rear drive, there's alot more technique involved in getting the M5 off the line to hit 60mph in 4.9 and 100 in 11.5. With no special driver skill the automatic, four wheel drive RS6 will knock off 60 and 100mph in around 5 and 12 seconds all day but turning off wheelspin control, holding it against the brakes and dialing in 3000 rpm, its possible to launch harder and get them down to 4.8 and 11.6.

The RS6 feels mighty quick when you stoke its rumbling twin turbo V8 up to full boost, no question. It delivers the sort of thrust that warrants a warning on its cup holders advising that full power kickdown while carrying hot beverages is not recommended. And yet there is no doubt the E55 hits even harder and faster, exposing a minimal amount of lag that you otherwise wouldn't notice. Similarly, its linear, unrelenting thrust points up a slight flattening of the Audi's delivery in the mid-range.

You look to the M5 with its long established reputation to show how a big performance saloon should behave, and once you've slipped behind the wheel, it feels more right- the driving position is lower and you feel more sucked-in, more a part of the car. Its ride feels initially tauter but its a suprise to see its traction control light flashing almost as often as the Merc's was on the same greasy roads.

The BMW's normally aspirated 5 litre V8 doesn't have anything like the low end surge of the force-fed Merc and Audi V8's but work it through the rev range and its gains lusty strength and purpose above 4000 rpm, lunging for the the redline with a hard yet refined eight cylinder whirr. The sensation of a big, heavy car beneath you is ever present but the difference is that after a few miles your tentative extending of the throttle and pushing against the grip in corners is building rather than eroding your confidence.

~What is enough power for the road ? Everyone has their own idea, and in this class, with rear wheel drive, I dont think the M5 is far off it. In the right circumstances, the E55 feels sensationally faster which, of course, is its own buzz and has an undeniable appeal. As we said at the outset, its extraordinary pace redifines the performance saloon: 0-100 in 10.2 is simply astonishing. Whatever you drive, you'll think twice about messing with the E55 in a straight line, always assuming you spot what it is in the first place.

Yet the M5 has only that to fear. In this class it remains on top because it is the complete package, blending excellent performance with peerless control and percision of chassis, throttle and steering. It would probably struggle to deploy the E55's massive torque and frankly, it doesn't need it. Sometimes you can have too much of a good thing.

Thanks for the post. Yet again the M5 comes out on top - and this against the very latest & greatest from the competition. Excellent

yes sir,

we have discussed this a few times... but it's always good reading how a car already at the end of its 4 year production life holds its own (and then some) against the might of MB and Audi who have had years to play catchup..

I really don't see the point of these reviews. Even if the W211 E55 beats the E39 M5 ... so what? If I was MB, I wouldn't even allow magazines to comparisions such as this. Why? Well ... shouldn't the new E55 be compared to the E60 M5?

By comparing the new E55 to the E39 M5 and gettig beat on over all performance, you are basicly stating that even given a generation MB still can't match the E39 M5 performance? Isn't this just down right sad?

Back when the E39 M5 and W210 E55 came out, magazines can't stop doing comparisons between the two. Eventually, the MB became just another M5 wanna be w/ a slushbox. This is also sad ...

So what if the W211 E55 can achieve 150+ at around 22 seconds? I am pretty sure that the M5 would match these numbers.

My Point: Comparing cars of two different generations isn't fair in the first place. However, getting your butt kicked by a 4+ year old model is just sad.

my 2 cents.

Kevin:

I have to disagree with the logic used in your argument. On this board we have had many a user question whether they should keep their E39 M5 or get the W211 E55. There is a valid comparison between the two models.

Secondly, using your logic we should question whether the E39 M5 could even be compared to the W210 E55 (yes the "old" E55). There was a slight delay between the introduction of the W210 E55 and our beloved E39 M5. This delay could be as a result of BMW producing the E39 M5 to respond not to the W210 E55 but the W211 E55. The BMW engineering and production people knew back then that they needed to build a car in anticipation of what AMG was going to throw at them 5 years later!

Kevin, how do you suggest the new E55 be compared to a car that hasn't even been shown publicly yet, much less driven by anyone? You gotta compare what on the market currently, right?

As for 0-150, the m5 takes about 30 seconds. Compared to the E55, it's getting all four of it's doors blown off.

It's not "sad" that the E55 still came up short in the comparison...to me, it just speaks volumes on the basic goodness of our E39 M5. I picked this car over the CL55, which IS currently available with the same powertrain as the E. I just like the connected to the road feel of the M5 so much better!

I guess you guys are right in saying we should compare the best MB and BMW has to offer at this given time. Partly because the market out there will always be looking at what's the best each company has to offer. Also, if my logic applies, then it doesn't make sense comparing the new Audi S4 to the E46 M3 either. So, I agree, we should be comparing the best each company has to offer at a given time.

As for my prior post, all I am saying is that we should keep in mind that, as Tom stated above, BMW designed a car so good that even 5 years later MB's W211 E55 still can't catch up when compared point-for-point performance-wise. The E39 M5 is amazing, able to hold it's own against all the new monsters on the road.

MB makes great soccer mom cruisers, BMW makes great driver's cars. That's what I always say. If the E55 wants to blast the doors off a M5, then let it do it. Atleast the M5 driver can still feel the road at 150+mph.

PS. If a soccer mom passes me on the highway in a W211 E55 AMG, I am going to RMS and getting Emma super charged. End of story.

I'll take a 3 year old M5 over any Merc E55 any day of the week. What the Merc has in acceleration, it more than makes up for the other way in handling. Didn't you guys see that comparison video by some european car show or magazine where the driver ended up spinning the E55 after doing a slalom test?

What a POS.

If I want to go fast, pure and simple, I'll buy a Porsche Turbo and mod it. As fast as you guys think an SL 55 is, let's put it into perspective.

A Manthey 996 Turbo will do 0-200km in 9.3 seconds, faster than the Ferrari Enzo. Ruf R Turbo will do it in 11.8 seconds. This is with $17K in mods for the Ruf and about $50K for the Manthey.

With either of these cars, I would be more than happy to embarrass any of those evil AMG cars.

With prices for the SL 55 AMG going at around $150K-180K around here, I don't see the point in getting one.

If I want a sedan, I'll buy an E39 M5, thank you very much. Even if it is slower in a straight line. To me, it's a Porsche Turbo with 4 doors and better throttle response.

A bit OT I know-- but I can't STAND MERCEDES whoring out the AMG brand! Now you're gonna have soccer moms and other terrible drivers buying 500bhp cars and wreaking havoc on the road. And a suspension that sucks to boot.

As I said on another thread the E55 is making way more than 469hp. With that kind of trap speed on an automatic car weighing like 4200lbs it's gotta be around 500.

My problem is that I think the DSC in my 01 M5 is too intrusive and the magazine reviews about the E55 say that the electronics drive that car. More intrusive than the DSC? Blah!

Still 115-116mph at 4200lbs is freakin unbelievable for a production car. Put that motor in the SLK32AMG (SLK55 AMG!) and you would have an 11sec 1/4 car. WOW! MB should be proud of that. It's also a beaut. They just need to work on the overall driving dynamic. There is no way that car is a POS though.

I guess if you want a stick get the M5, if you want an auto, get an E55.

Just heard a rumor that MB will be tweaking the E55 to 500hp in 05' in anticapation of the competition coming from the e60 ///M5

Our airfield events are completely safe based on years of experience, we conduct them during clear visibility with mature participants that have several years of experience with high-performance automobiles, large unobstructed run-off zones on sealed off private former military airbases and we clearly mark the braking zones. If inexperienced with high speed driving we do not recommend organizing your own event but attending a high-performance driving school. The use of the term "BMW" on this site is for reference only, and does not imply any connection between m5board.com and BMW AG or BMW North America.
