New type radar in Gilroy, CA

Tech TV's Tech Live program is airing a segment about a new type of RADAR installed in a Camaro in Gilroy, CA.

The Camaro shown was from the Gilroy Police Dept. It does not have any light bars on the roof. They are inside the cabin.

The kicker is that this RADAR has two antennas that can be switched back and forth to measure the speed of a car that is coming up behind the officer as well as oncoming cars.

The program stated that the CHP also use this RADAR as well as large metropolitan cities.

Just a heads up. My guess is that this has been in use for a while since the media have just reported it.

Additional specs:

Ka. band
Dual antenna (front and back)
$1500-2000 per unit

We already have dual antenna radar here. I've seen them on the local Sheriff cruisers as well as the local police, they both run off of Ka... nothing that a decent radar detector can't pick up.

Basil,

Good to hear from you. I hope you are not speaking from direct experience regarding the radar. I have seen CHP cars with radar mounted both front and rear for some time now.

Bring on the V1!

Mark

Thanks Mark,

No ... well not with that type of system anyway. I was nabbed in my town recently as I was coming down a hill. I'll try to beat it in court on a technicality.

I too have seen the little round antennas in the back but I couldn't recall if they were the only antenna in the car. I usually pass by cruisers (if I was speeding) looking like I'm innocently oblivious to their presence - and I'm sure they know it.

I guess the TV segment was just for mainstream consumption.

The next time I go through Gilroy on 152 or 25 I'll keep in mind that the white Camaro without a light bar that I'm fast closing in on may be a predator. The markings may not be obvious untill it's too late.

Incidentally Mark, the next time you (or anyone) comes up here from So. Cal. for an M5 Wine Country Tour you might consider taking Rt. 33 which runs sort of parallel to 5. It's pretty desolate and wide open.

Love my V1!

Yes. You have to get a V1 if you don't already have one. That way, you can detect them when they sneak up on you from behind.

The other day WHOOOWEEE! The Lidar warning came on and I about jumped out of my seat. It is loud and has a very distinct alarm sound. Until then I'd never heard it before. Just Ka and X. I never eyeballed the source. (It was on 101 near Redwood City.) I suppose it could have been a false but I can't be sure one way or the other. Anyone know who uses Lidar in the SF Bay Area?

Also, has anyone detected any X band radar in the SF Bay Area? All I get are annoying falses on X band. Wish there was a way to shut it off like you can with an Escort.

Basil,

Rt. 33 you say. I see it on the map. Normally when I am driving up for the drives, I am trying to set a new land speed record for the 5 between LA and the Bay area. I will have to try the route next time.

BTW - when is the next time? I look forward to it whenever. I have seen cars pulled over for catching up to CHP cars before. Those sneaky Camero's. Do they have an "exempt" plate on the rear of the car?

Mark

Need4spd,

You can turn off X ban on the V1. Goto the V1 web page and read the reprogramming the V1 .

As for the LIDAR warning, if you were by the big roadsign electronic display, that was the source of the false. Otherwise, it was probably an SUV braking in front of you with the LED brake lights. I find that these frequently trigger LIDAR alerts on the V1. As far as I know, there are no law enforcement units using LIDAR in the Bay Area, but that may change since I believe they are using it down in the LA area.

RSouthern,
Thanks for the help. I'm turning off that X band tonight. And you're right. I was near that big sign, so that must have been the source of the false LIDAR warning (funny though it's never done that before).

Did Basil fail to mention that Gilroy is the garlic capital of the US? Could our detectors be picking that smell up to ?

Mark

this would be the "G" band

Mark,

33 is a great road, we used to ride it a lot with street bikes.

RE: garlic
My wife used to live in Los Gatos, which is quite a ways North of Gilroy. She says that if the garlic was ripe and the wind was right, you could smell it in downtown Los Gatos.

RSouthern
Great tip on the LED induced LIDAR falses we've been getting on our V1s. I was wondering how they snuck so many Laser guns into our Von's parking lot!
