I saw this one bmwnation.com, and it got me thinking:
There is no word on an E90 M3 Sedan, BUT, and this is a very big BUT, there is a very quiet whisper that the current E46 line MAY see an M3 Sedan. This would happen in the 2 years that it will take to bring to market the all new E60 M5. This is very far fetched, but may be an avenue for BMW to get some solid sales relatively cheaply, by modifying the existing 330 Sedan. Don't get your hopes up, though.
It makes sense though. With the M5 leaving, there will be a void for a high performance 4-door BMW sedan. I think most people agree that the closeness between the M3 and M5 has meant no M3 sedan, but with the M5 going offline for 1.5-2 years, it would seem remiss not to compete with something, especially with the onslaught of high horsepower machines from MB.
It has certainly happened before, and has been successful. It seems possiable but the ball is in BMW's court in whether or not they want to produce it..
I don't think there will ever be an E46 M3 sedan. Even though BMW will be without a four door ///M car for a while, their plans for the future make things a little difficult. The next 3 series, E90, will be available only in sedan/touring body. BMW will introduce the 4 series, E91, as the coupe and convertable versions of the 3 series. That means the next M3 will actually be an M4, E91. If that wasn't enough to further confuse everyone, there is also the soon-to-be-released E61 6 series. Which will also get an ///M version.
Will there be an E90 M3 sedan? who knows, probably, if and only if there is a market for it. The E36 M3 sedan did not fare so well at the showrooms, neither did the M roadster and M coupe. This is one of the reasons that BMW AG has been stating that there will be no MZ4, E46 M3 sedan, and Z4 coupe.
It's too bad, because I still love the M coupe!

The latest word from both BMW AG and BMW NA has been that there will be no ///M version of the Z4. The last time anyone has seen spy photos of the prototype MZ4 was last summer. There have been no sightings of any quad piped Z4s on the Nurburgring lately.

What !?!?! No MZ4 ? No M roadster ? That's criminal!
Folks may not like to acknowledge it, but even though the rear suspension is not the most high-tech piece of work, the last M roadster (and even more so the M coupe) is the most nimble, best performing BMW ever.
I was starting to accept the Z4 for what it is, but if they don't build an M version, I spit on it, now and forever!
I think I read something in the Roundel a few months back that said the M3 would be a two-door only, from now on. Couldn't tell if they meant only the E46 version. A slightly larger 4-door M3 with an alloy V8 would be very sweet.
