About 2 weeks ago my front left turning signal light was intermittently not working. When it was not working the flicker would click much faster, which I expected. But a light bulb doesn’t burn out “intermittently”, either it works or it burns out. Well 2 days later the same thing happened to my right side front signal, it would work intermittently for a day and then die.
I went to my friendly shop (not the dealer) and as you can see the problem was a burned contact…… On BOTH SIDES! Is this something anyone else experienced?
And a closeup:
Oh yes, after being away from this board for about 2 months I am back. It is good to be back J

I experienced the same problem with my passenger-side front turn signal. I took it to the dealership twice before a final fix occurred. During the first trip, the dealership replaced the bulb and the socket. A few weeks later the bulb shorted which caused the rapid flickering when activated. I went back again for the correct fix. Apparently, the bulb design was defective and the unit would burn-out (short) at the contact points in the socket, not the element itself. The dealership replaced the bulb with the newer designed bulb and all has been well since the installation over six months ago.
Just had mine replaced under warranty, too. Passenger side. A few weeks ago, the driver's side quit working, but it was a broken wire! I figure it somehow it got pinched during manufacturing, as I certainly hadn't done any work in that part of the car. At the time, I figured it wasn't worth my time to bring it to the dealer, so a bit of solder, some heat shrink tubing and a splice wire later, and it was good as new. Of course, then the passenger side went and the socket needed replacing, so I had to go to the dealer anyway!
Originally posted by tonyo I always request a new socket with the new bulb. I'm hoping that one of these days, they'll have redesigned it and I'll get the better one....
I'm not sure what you mean by that. My '01 M5 has the regular bayonet type as opposed to the "stick-in" type that Arie seems to have.

I have had the exact same thing occur on my car. I had to take a piece of wire and wrap it around the base to secure it in the slide in socket. This prevents the bulb from slipping back out and causing this short to occur. A very poor design indeed.
Both of my turn indicators have this problem. If you push the bulb back into the socket, it just pops back out from time to time.
This happened to me when I was testing the LED turn indicators. The LEDs have the same base, but do not pop out. This being said, I believe that the base is the problem and in light of the shorting that you have seen as well as I, THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL FROM BMW BEFORE YOU GET A REAL FIRE!

You mean you have a different bulb and base than the ones shown above? Yous is not a slide in style?
