        DVD Nav questions

Has anyone looked into an upgrade to the new DVD based Nav system? I would hope that I could just swap out the "player" on my '02 system.

Navtech just sent out an advertisement for their 2002.1 version of the CDs (bazaar that they are always a year behind). None the less, I need 2 CDs for my travels. They are offering all 8 CDs for less than the price of two but it would sure be nice to have a single DVD for the whole country. I'd also hate to spend the money for the CDs and a month later be able to do a DVD upgrade.

BTW, it sounds like the CDs are much improved with more cities detailed, easier nav of cities across county borders, 2 million miles of new roads, route planning of anywhere from any CD, and more.

I spoke with Joe at Crevier BMW and he seems to think that if you currently have a MK III system (which you do), then for $1500 you can swap out the CD-based unit and put in a DVD-based one that will also play older CD maps as well as the new DVD ones. They are hard to come by at the moment as BMW has put a freeze on the part number and will only release a unit to the dealer on the basis of a technical problem with an existing in-car unit.
