GPS thinks M5 is in the Sea

My GPS position indicator does not place the position of the car correctly ie: driving west on Pacific Coast Highway the car is shown to be traveling Northeast AND in the Pacific Ocean. When driving in more land locked areas the GPS cannot locate the vehicle's correct location. Anybody had similar GPS issue's ? I have entered the location of the car into the GPS and set the destination address / cursor correctly. Thanx...David

        C4M4,
I have seen a similiar situation at a nearby lake. An island was not shown on the GPS so it thought I was in the middle of water. A few questions: Do you have the correct CD region? California should be map 1. What version of map CD is it? The latest is 2002.1 per http://www.navtech.com Newer ones may be better.

Is it accurate in most places (home, work, etc)? Inaccuracy in some places may be caused by trees, mountains, etc where the car is not in direct view of many satelites. I think it uses dead reckoning during blind spots but I've seen it get 200 yards off and then all of a sudden correct itself.

BTW, "store position" merely puts a name to the current location such as "home" or "work" to store in the address book. When you use the map scroll feature, that sets a destination.

When you look at the map do you get the "GPS available" symbol?

If not, pull both fuses for the nav system, wait a few hours, insert the fuses again, and the Nav computer and GPS receiver will have been reset. If you get the problem again, have the GPS receiver replaced.

FYI, you're not alone. it was on the news few years back, an elderly man driving a brand new 5 series into the ocean. Apparantly the GPS told him to make that turn

I am going on a hunch here, but, do you think the built in seismic clairvoyant sensor in the M5 is trying to tell you something about the future anticipated position of the Pacific Coast Hwy?

LGREM is correct that it could be an antenna issue.

This may be the solution for a number of us with this intermittent problem - personal items in the space housing the system.

I've been having this problem in both of my E39's for years and recently it got so bad that I decided to have the dealer look at it.

The service advisor told me that my antenna connection was compromised and to fix it they would have to replace both electronic boxes since they too might be compromised. (their shotgun effect is to reduce claims on their 12 mo. warranty on all of their work.)

Well, knowing that my problem was intermittent I told them not to fix it (no warranty) and, as I hoped, the system has been working fine so far (at least the location accuracy).

I had stuffed three CD cassettes, a disposable camera and various other items that must have pushed against the wires.

Try cleaning out the space and looking for loose wires, etc. The service dept. took all the items out of that space and the system has worked fine ever since. I don’t know if they had to reset anything or if making good the antenna connection was enough to bring the system back to its prior level of mediocrity (hey, at least I’m not in the ocean). I’m not sure what is what back there but I did notice some thin wires that I could well have dislodged.

I hope everyone’s GPS location problems are as simple as this.

also after you try the connection for the antenna, you can also take out the fuse for the gps wait 5 minutes then plug it back in.
