03' Carrera vs 03' M5
My business partner owns a 03' 911 cabriolet with a 320hp. six cylinder mated to a six speed stick. This car handles great and is fast but it does not seem exceptionally fast. It takes high engine revs to get any power out of the car. Supposedly, it runs a 0-60 in 4.9 secs which is close the M5.
Can i expect better performance from an M5 or are they very similiar in straight line acceleration?

It will be quite similar to say 80-90 mph -if your friend can shift good- and then I guess the M5 will slowly walk away. The higher the speeds are the better you'll take him. 911s have excellent traction when starting due to their engine placement.
Good luck and get him
If it was a non convertible it owuld have been closer. He'll take you in the corners though...

IMO that 911 is more like an M3 than an M5.
Get some KW coilovers and a brake upgrade and I think you will dispose of it.
P.s. I hear there is one last position left for the group buy on the Carbon fibre hood.

the normal 996? I had a chance of running w/ one on RT 95 the other day, it was a 994 C4 from the badging at the back. Eh ... it wasn't that fast to me? I would hear it's engine rev and then gun it in 4th, always managed to keep up or even gain on it. ??

The major difference is torque. With its greater torque, the M5 will handle getting off the line with more grace and less drama, unless you switch off the DSC and purposely light the tires. Of course, the form factor difference is huge, what with fixed roof vs. cabrio, 2 vs. 4 doors, real trunk, etc.

Thats because of the H or flat layout right? I heard they were really good.... subaru seemed to like the idea... but Id take a nice M powered V8 over a turbo'd six any day!

From my experience the 996 feels faster, but I'm sure the M5 will beat it. The M5 pulls smoothly through the gears because of the wide torque curve, whereas the 996 really starts to pull at the higher rpms. It also might feel faster because of the lower seating position and rougher ride. Hope this helps.

Wireless, primarily it comes down to the driver. One of my friends has an '02 996, and we raced each other hard, first throught the twisties and then on a straightaway. I destroyed (by a long way) him in both.
The only explanation for the major difference in speed must be that he doesn't know how to maximize the car's capabilities. And therefore, as the M5 and the 996 have similar performance specs, a more than slight difference in driver skill will either negate or exagerate any particular advantages one car has over the other.

It's because the engine is in the back, putting all it's weight on the rear wheels. BTW, 996C4 are N/A engines. Only TT and GT2 are turbo engines.
