This board got into quite a bit of discussion from the first day l joined based on making their M5 feel/look and go better then the next guy. I think everyone enjoys personalizing any or all of their cars, no matter how much you paid for them, it can be really addicting.
Most of us waited many months if not years for the M5 to hit the streets in the US, for me it was 15 months from my deposit date.....way too long
Well l remember driving the car out of the dealers yard and all l could think was how perfect this car was for what l wanted in looks image function and power.
But as what happens to many of us on this board l to was hit by personalizing my car to suit what we exactly want the car to be.
At around the 6th month mark l began to look for some sort of ECU upgrade. I knew the M5 had only hit the streets for a short period of time in the US and was still very new to the tuning market, and especially an already a strong car like the M5.
I did a fair amount of hunting around in mags and the web and really didn't see any company's out there that grabbed my attention 100%.
I remembered a company back in Australia that l had seen in our car mags and l knew they dominated the chip market in Australia for many years. So l made a few calls and talked in detail.....probably too much, about my car and finding out all the pro's and con's of getting it Powerchiped ......the only problem in the end was really waiting for the gear to be posted over to the US.
It was very clear from the start that the team at Powerchip was very much on the ball with the chip market and was really interested in getting a chip in my M5 from day 1....that got my attention
I'm not a total moron on the computer, probably about average at best, so when the boss of Powerchip said l could do the reprograming myself, l thought he was kidding....."no really" I was so concerned that l would or could screw it all up that l got nervous when the time came. Wayne was very confident l could pull it off no problems at all. So they send the disc and cables that l needed to perform the conversion to Florida to let me have a shot at it that day. So l get a "reading'" from the M5 and email it back to them....very easy. By the next morning l had the new converted program for the M5 in my unread mail box. So that night l get the car all ready for it's "brain transplant" .....15 min later it was all done and the car was ready for it's first test run......now that was back in Feb 2001.
I backed the car out of the driveway and took off at about 50% for 100yards and straight away l knew and felt the car was more alive and eager in that first few seconds. After restricting myself to the 30mph limit in the community l live in it was out onto the back roads.
I was totally sold on the Powerchip conversion in the first few minutes of getting out on the open road. What was even better was the car was going to improve over the next 100 odd miles as the car was learning it's new personalty and lease on life.
So looking back later in that year after doing some other friends BMW's l thought of how easy it was to get you're car upgraded in just two 15 min steps....hmmmm
While l was putting in orders for extra "chips" l said to Wayne "l think you guys should have a serious look at making you're way over to the US in the future" I think Wayne had thought about it now and then, but had never quiet had someone really push the idea hard enough to take it on.
I told him if he thought he was interested in taking on the challenge of the US to give me a call.
So l get the call some time later and we do some very early tossing around of ideas to see what the US is all about.
The time comes for me when l really want to take a serious look and the possibility of getting Powerchip to extend their marketing and product talents to the US. I have my advisor totally flip Powerchip upside down and inside out and see if they have the creds to come to the US and make in roads into one very tough market for all cars, but l liked their skills in tuning European cars like my M5.
I find out that even though l had a BMW and that's all Wayne and l really talked about in the early days, Powerchip has built thousands of programs for many makes and models.....even better was that the US was the biggest car park in the world.
I'm know my advisor asked so many questions Wayne's head must have been spinning non stop for months on end.
From the very early stages of my dealings l knew Powerchip valued their customers, something that gets missed by many companys in the US. I knew that their product was for real from my personal experience in the M5 and all the other people loved their converted cars extra omph !!!
So decide to get involved into creating a position for Powerchip to come to the US buy mid 2002 .
It's now 2003 and l'm officially a Powerchip investor.
The Powerchip USA office opens in CA on January 23, you will probably notice Powerchip ads in some of the car magazines during the year.
So my relationship with Powerchip all came from trying and loving the way my car felt and drove after the new Powerchip was installed.
Its not quiet like the Remminton man ad and l didn't buy the company after using the product but l certainly felt like l wanted to be involved in getting them into the vast US market.
I know many of you made you're money from investing in a company's future and it's growth and all based of good advice or you're own gut feelings or findings, so this is mine
So l just wanted to let you all know that l now have an official relationship with Powerchip, and as some of you may know l've recommended them to you for an upgraded chip in you're BMW, but as times have moved on my involvement has gotten stronger as you can see.
Please don't fear... l won't be out there pushing the Powerchip name in you're face 24/7 l too am a Powerchip customer and l to would get tired if a guy kept pumping his product on message boards and then trying to make it look like he was just a member...btw Gustav would be all over me in 2 seconds!!!
I just felt it was necessary for me to put all the cards out on the table for all to see.
Thanks for this board it's the best....time to cry
If you have any questions l would be happy to answer them anytime just pm me, or reply
Have a great 2003...it's off and running already.
l might see some of you around the country now and then, but if not make sure you work hard make sure you have plenty of fun as well....enjoy the ride.
