QUESTION: Need advise from guys who have real tire mounting experience............

        HI Guys,
Some of you know that I have a 2003 model M5 on order, due in FEB. of 03. So far, I have purchased the Kelleners 83 mm size exhaust, X-Pipe and aftermarket rims. The rims are by Racing Dynamics. They are known as the RS 2 three piece rim. I purchased the 19" rim size.
Okay, Im about to order the rubber for these rims. I spoke with theTire Rack people, and they told me the following:
They said that I could mount in the front, 245/35YR19. This tire size has a 9.5" width, when looking at the rubber tread from left to right. The rear tire, 285/30ZR19. This tire has a width of 11.1" wide, from left to the right side of the tread area.
So, my question is can the rears be that wide
11.1 inches is WIDE ! According to the sales rep. it would be fine. Im worried about ordering this size tire and having rubbing problems/issues once they are mounted onto the wheel rim and installed on the car. I know that the fenders could be "ROLLED" but Im not certain that rolling the fenders would be enough to give sufficient clearance for the tires.
I guess Im looking for some reassurance from anyone, with real/true tire mounting experiences and whether its okay or not okay to go up to the 11.1 inch rear width tire size.
I really do want the tires to be wide, so Im hoping someone will verify with me, that it is fine to mount such a size tire on the rear of the M5 car.

        Thank you Guys!
        Robert

        H Robert,

If the racing dynamics wheels are 8-8.5" wide up front and 9.5-10" wide in back, you will have no problem running 245 in front and 275 or 285 in the rear. The OEM widths on wheels are 8" and 9.5" widths respectively and they are shod with 245 and 275 width tires respectively.

As far as the rack saying the 285 tires are 11.1" wide, that is the maximum allowable width that you can run the ties on. i.e 11.1" wide wheels theoretically. So in actuality, the width of the rubber will be determined a lot by the width of the wheels, whch yours are probably 9.5 to 10". Don't worry abotu it, go ahead and order the 285.

If your car will be lowered and you are running even slightly wider shoes, it may be a good idea to roll the rear fender a bit more than what the factory did to be safe (.5-1 inch more). I had 10" wide wheels with 275 width s-03 tires on my old M5 and the fender rubbed occassionally because I had a kelleners suspension on it. That extra half inch of width and 20mm of height difference meant rubbing under hard acceleration with 3 passengers in the car.

I hope I helped. As always, PM me if you want me to expain more.

3 passengers = TCM in the back seat Not good for my legs and not good for the M5 fender liner.
