2002.1 CD UPDATE Observations and General Navi Questions and Issues:
2002.1 CD UPDATE Observations and General Navi Questions and Issues:
1. Just purchased the 2002.1 nav disk from Navtech ($145.00) including shipping. It was released within the last three weeks and took more than an hour to install since you are instructed to delete all Address Book entries and re-enter after installing new CD. You also have to delete the Last Destination List. Ain’t progress great!
As far as I can tell after using it for a short trip, it runs (i.e.) updates much more slowly. After you hit “Directions”, it takes a couple of minutes actually provide directions. The 2001 version was much quicker!
2. My car came with software version SW3-1/20. When I was in for service about 8 months ago, I was told that updated software was available (I think it is the split-screen version), but that it was full of problems and that due to all of the complaints, BMW had released a bulletin showing dealerships how to delete the updated software and go back to the original version. Obviously, with this glowing recommendation, I opted not to go with the upgrade.
3. Recently my nav locked up and showed my location at work, even though I had driven 40 miles away. I turned the car off and restarted several times, to no avail. Finally, I took the nav disk out of the unit and reinstalled it. After much blinking, flashing and telling me to ‘please wait’ it restarted. But ever since, my gps seems to be off by about one tenth of a mile. When it says “You have arrived” and shows 0 miles to destination, I have to drive a tenth of a mile further before actually arriving and the distance to destination shows .1.
Any constructive comments would be greatly appreciated.

I highly recommend that you go ahead with upgrading your navigation OS to v20. BMW has released a number of versions since SW3-1/20 which is what you have. I have nothing but glowing praises for the newest version. I can't say the same however for the navigation disks since I'm still using version 2001.2. I don't see the need to get the newer disk at this time especially given the negative reviews that I've been hearing about it. Some of which says that the turn by turn directions are no longer available.
I say upgrade your navigation OS. BTW I also have a 2001 M5 too.

atomic80, the newer versions of the NAV software are faster. The new NAV map CDs (and DVDs) have Full-Coverage, which doubles the number of roads available for routing. Upgrading the software from 3-1/20 should improve performance. There are still driving directions for all of the roads in the previous versions, but NAVtech/BMW decided to add all avaialble roads to the NAV unit. Some of the newly available roads don't have voice directions, but routing is still available. Evidently, Navtech people have to drive and program in the directions in by driving the areas - a very time consuming effort.
In KY, the only cities with any detail available prior to Full-Coverage were Louisville and Northen KY area (not even the largest city, Lexington). I would think the upgrade would be better than existing even without voice driving directions in some of the newly available areas, as at least you have the roads in those areas now.

you remember when people upgraded from like version 17 to 18 or something, they all claimed that running the 2001.2 CD was faster than the 2001.1 CD....

Sorry for the potential FAQ - but as a new beast owner, I've been wondering about this: The NavOS & maps are separate packages. I know I can get new maps from Navtech, but where do I get updated NavOS software?

If you do a search on this board, you'll find several threads that should answer your questions about that and provide you with places to download/install the newer NAV OS's.

I don't think there are any active NavOS sites operating to download the operating system updates. In any event, you can order the OS upgrade and the Key-CD (needed if upgrading for versions prior to v18 -- also known as 3-1/40). The OS upgrade is under $25. Also, most dealers will either perform the upgrade free at your next service or let you borrow their copy for the 5 minute upgrade process.
You can also complain that the NAV is slow with the new map CDs, and that you have an old OS version, and that you have information that the newer NAV versions are faster. They will probably cover this upgrade under full free maintenance.
