Parking Brake Handle Removal?

OK Guys! Bought a nice chrome & carbon fiber parking brake (e-brake) handle for my 2002 Beast.

Before I screw up something, can anyone tell me how to remove the old handle? I removed the leather boot and cut off the black cable tie that encircled the leather stock handle at its base, but now how do I get the old handle off to replace it? The new handle has a hex wrench set screw but I don't see a set screw holding the stock handle in place.

Thanks for your help in advance!

I replaced mine. Its a bit of a chore. A side panel next to the drivers seat needs to come off as does most of the console. There are a couple of bolts that hold the parking brake handle on - one on the top and one on the bottom. I got one of my local automotive shop guys to give me the removal instructions. That'd be the best way but you should be able to figure it out. Start with removing the rear air vents in the console and the ash tray and flasher. You'll see the hold down bolts.

Whoa!!! I'm not talking about removing the entire lever, just the leather handle on the end. You shouldn't have to do any of that (I don't think anyway) to just do that. The handle just goes on the end of the metel lever. Thanks!

Yep! I bought the handle from BAV and it was the one on sale! This is getting scary! We're thinking too much alike! I haven't figured it out yet. The new handle looks simple. It's essentially a hollow tube made out of chrome and carbon fiber and has a larger opening at the base and a smaller opening at the end. The smaller opening is obviously for the parking brake release button. On the bottom of the base of the new handle is a small hex set screw and it comes with the appropriate hex wrench.

I pulled the leather boot off from the console (very easy...held in place with a few clips that just undo as you pull the boot from the top) and as you roll it up towards the handle, you will find a black cable lock tie that encircles the leather boot and holds the boot onto the base of the e-brake handle and keeps the boot from slipping back towards the console. No problem up to this point but now I'm stuck because I can't see how the old handle comes off! There's not a set screw holding it in place. I'd feel stupid if I had to have the dealership change this for me, hence my post for help. I'm not sure that the answer I received is right. It just seems that you shouldn't have to get into the console just to remove the hand-grip part of the handle. If you find out the way to do it, please let me know. I did a search for the subject before I posted the ? and found a few references about replacing the grip because of peeling, but no one said how to do it and I believe they were done by the dealer.

BTW, I also ordered ACS pedals and are waiting for them to be drop shipped.

Sorry, I was talking about replacing the entire parking brake assembly. You must not have to do that. However, I don't have any idea how to remove the existing handle. Are you sure the new doesn't just slip over the old one? BMW sells one like that with the brushed aluminum look - its for the cars with that standard emergency brake - and it just slips over the existing handle.

Mustang...

Nope, it doesn't fit over the old one! I think I'm going to have to give Bavarian Auto a call tomorrow and see if they can help me. Thanks anyway!

XrayMD,

Did you consider these petals?

AJUSA

I like the idea of the accelerator extension for heel/toe. Has anyone got any experience/feedback with this type of setup?

Mike

Good luck with the e-brake handle!

Nice pedals I love the accelerator extension.

They have a brake bleeder....does anyone know about it? I'll start a new thread.
