I know you guys are sick of clutches but....

Following my first post on the board I hope you guys can help me some more.
I experienced total and instant drive failure the other day on my 04/00 M5. By this I mean that I had had no hint of clutch slip or burning even though the car is driven in a very spirited manner until I changed gear 4 to 5 I think and had no drive at all! Clutch pedal feel etc did not change when selecting 1st and releasing clutch it seemed as if there was some drag but not enough to move the car forwards.
My garage said that the clutch was worn but not down to the rivets or burnt but wanted to put in a new one. I said that a clutch does not fail instantly in this manner in my view. The tech agreed but said that they would put in a new clutch and reassemble to see if it worked. To my great suprise it did!!
Having read a lot of posts on this board I believe that there are 2 sorts of clutch problem.
1. Weakness of clutch causing burntout at various mileages depending on driving technique. My tech confirms that the clutch part number has changed and that the new one has been put in my car. I am positive that the new clutch has more "bite" and is sharper than the old one.
2. The failure of something in the self adjusting mechanism symptoms being clutch pedal stays on floor etc.
My symptoms don't fit with either of these searios.
Does anybody have any ideas/experiences which might help me kick some arse at the dealers and save my £1000 bill.
Thanks in advance

Further thoughts

Does anybody know any detail about the release mech mod ie the memo number that was used when informing the garages. My garage say that they have not heard of this mod.

What parts did he replace? Just the disk? It sounds like the pressure plate is the problem from what you describe.
