m5 phone

I have posted previous thread on waiting for new M5 v60 phone - which has had a paucity of information when and if it would be available.

Based on information that I received after a writing a nasty letter to the CEO of BMW - the new motorola phone is not intended to ever work on the present generation M5.

This comes as a surprise to me since the contacts for the phone were changed on all production models after frb 2002.

Nevertheless, I have been waiting since my delivery in July 2002 to see if I could purchase th enew phone with the car, but based o this information will go ahead with the CPT 8000.

Any one heard anything to dispute the alleged info?

Hmmmm. When I last spoke with my salesman (Who is an enthusiast first, and a salesman second) about 3 weeks ago. He read over the phone to me part of a bulletin on the V60 phone being available in Jan that had been sent out through the delaer network. I believe it was an informational bulletin and didnt have alot of specifics as to models supported, but the intent of the bulletin was to inform the dealers of upcoming availability of the V60 phones.

To throw another wrench into the discussion, I've been trying to find all I can about the Bluetooth solutions for the M5 as I'd rather not be locked into a specific phone. (I enjoy new tech, and I like upgrading stuff) I have confirmed that there are part numbers for the Bluetooth kits for cars as far back as 2/01. SO, our cars ARE supported by the bluetooth kit. BMWNA just hasnt released it to the public yet. (Its been out for several months overseas) On a semi-positive note, I've been told that the Bluetooth Part numbers that I have found ARE showing up in the November and later US ETK CD's. So I'm hoping that if the part numbers are being added into the US parts system, they will be rolling them out sooner rather than later.. (I do not have a Nov or Dec ETK CD, so I cannot verify that the part numbers are actually there, but I've been told that they are.)

I'm still fighting with BMW about the Bluetooth issue and I'll keep folks updated if I find anything else out.. (So far BMWNA has been Less than helpful. Going as far as telling me that Bluetooth is NOT AVAILABLE in any form in the US market, even after I E-Mailed them a photo of an october delivery US M5 showing the Bluetooth option in the Computer.) I wouldnt mind as much if they would be honest with me and tell me they dont know.. But telling me that things are not available when I have photos and part numbers is a bit much.

Eventually we will get a phone for our cars. I hope.

bluetooth

Count,

Alternative to bluetooth. Check this out:
http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=PAR_CK3000

I have a sony ericsson T68i with Sony Ericsson HBH-30 bluetooth headset for now. Works like a champ in M5 but of course, not fully integrated.

Rare,

That looks pretty cool.. Thanks for the link.. I dont think that I'll grab one of those right yet, I'm still going to hold out for the BMW parts I think. I've been waiting since I took delivery in May, so a little longer wait isnt going to kill me. (Although I can keep this info as a backup plan in case BMWNA decides to only offer kits for the new builds.) The main reason that I'm waiting for the BMW Bluetooth is the full integration with the car.. I suppose its partially being stubborn on my part, but the car came with phone controls integrated into the wheel and the stereo and the display, and I'd like to be able to use those controls.. Also, I believe that the BMW kits increase the output transmit power for a better signal. (Since the mobile phones are limited in power output for safety) I'm not sure if the Parrot Kit steps up the transmit power and adds an external antenna.

I'm also a little concerned about potential integration issues and warrenty concerns. (The Parrot kit says it can be used to Mute the car stereo for example. I would assume that would have to be physically tied into the stereo system. And that connection could void the warrenty on the stereo/DSP in the car). How is yours installed? And do you know if the parrot kit has an outboard transmitter and antenna. (The Tech specs on that page dont mention anything about that as far as I can see)

The only reason that I havent ordered the BMW kit that I need from overseas is there is the potential for BMWNA to not honor the warrenty if something went wrong because its not a NA part. (And I've checked with the parts folks locally and they have said that BMWNA has not honored warrenty on BMW parts that were imported into the US in the past. It apparently has to be a US part for them to do anything with it.) And with the costs of the Radio/Nav/DSP parts, I'd prefer to keep them covered as long as I can.. It would be great if BMWNA wasnt always so behind the rest of the world on parts.. Oh well..

Count,

I'm with you on this... This is why I haven't bought the darn thing yet. Besides, the site's price is bit higher than rest of the world. Sony Ericsson T68i and bluetooth headset will do just fine for now.

Take care,

Rare

Very interesting. I will wait until I hear of further as the blue tooth options clearly is superior to what is currently available.

The guy at BMW that I corresponded with said the V60 was slated to be used in the 7 series cars as of 1/03 - but not for the M5?

I had my M5 delivered in July and have been waiting as you on a definitive answer do I can get an integrated phone (which is one reason I bought the phone.

Do you want to call him directly and see where you get? If we can get a conensus answer it would be helpful - the problem is I don't know if they know what they are talking about.

Why would they change the phone contact inthe 2002 m5 if a alternate phone was not int he plans?

As soon as my sales guy gets back from a short holiday and I can verify that the part numbers ARE in the US version of the ETK, I'm going to call BMW back again and see what sort of story they give me.. I want to make sure that I have all of my ducks in a row before I start calling them on the carpet about bad information.. (Although the new BMW Tech magazine still says that a BMW Assist operator can unlock your doors remotely, and they cant.. SO, info accuracy is questionable to begin with.)

Interesting side note: We know that BMWNA has an account here, and in the past they have advised folks to call the 800 number for more info. The Phone thread has been ongoing in some form or another for MONTHS now and we havent so much as gotten a squeak of a canned response to call for more info..

Another item that is semi-related to this whole Phone issue that I cannot seem to get any info on is the new NAV software.. It seems that the new cars are coming with Ver. 21 of the Nav software. (Its apparently the V. 21 software that has the Bluetooth option in the menus.) I havent been able to find out when we can get the upgraded software installed into our cars. And I havent seen any discussion about anyone getting the software themselves as we have seen in the past. (And I was told by a helpful BMWNA phone rep that V19 was the most current software out there.)

I'll keep you updated as soon as I hear anything else.. Maybe one of the kind folks here has access to the latest ETK CD and can check the part numbers.. Once we KNOW for sure that the part numbers show up as US parts, that gives us more leverage to try to get answers.

I helped a friend of mine install the Parrot CK3000 in a sequoia. It worked great for 5 minutes, then the box could never been seen by the phone again! For 3 weeks my friend has been trying to recieve a replacement, but as of today, still nothing.

I am also going to wait for the BMW parts. My only concern is if they do not go back to the 2000 model year. Then I will have to rethink my options.
